National sanitation month launched in Gaibandha BSS, Gaibandha National sanitation month-2007 was launched in the district on Monday. Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) and district administration jointly organised the launching ceremony in cooperation with UNICEF. The function was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner of Gaibandha Quazi Anwarul Hakim as the chief guest at the conference room of district collectorate. Among others, by additional Deputy Commissioner Abul Bayes Mia, Civil Surgeon Dr M. Shamsul Haque and Executive Engineer of DPHE Abujar M. Masudar Rahman spoke on the occasion. The speakers laid stress on the need of making the sanitation month a success and achieve total sanitation coverage in the district by 2008. In observance of the month, district and upazila administration and DPHE have chalked out elaborate programmes for raising awareness about sanitation that included organising procession, discussion, art competition and cultural show, distribution of leaflets. Meanwhile, the preparation of voter list with photographs and national identity cards will be started in the district on November 4. After inauguration of the registration process by the Deputy Commissioner, the data collectors will visit door to door for distributing the forms. In the first phase, the work for preparation of voter list will begin in Gaibandha Pourasabha and Sadar Upazila areas. District election officer Syed Ali Imam said 97 Assistant Registration officers, 1,187 supervisors and 5,316 data collectors have already been appointed for the work. A total of 16,22,054 prospective voters would be registered at 823 centers in the district. Members of Bangladesh Army will supervise the registration process.
