News Briefs 20 shops gutted in Bhola Bhola, Oct 18: Some 20 shops were gutted in a devastating fire at Khaserhat Bazar in Tajmuddin Upazila at small hours today (Thursday). The fire caused loss of about Tk 50 lakh, market sources said. The sources said the fire originating from electric short circuit in a shop at the market at about 1 am soon engulfed the nearby shops. On information, fire fighters from Borhanuddin rushed to the scene and put out the blaze after several hours of hectic effort. One killed in comilla road mishap Comilla, Oct 18: A man was killed and 10 other people were injured as a bus fell into a roadside ditch at Shaheednagar in Daudkandi upazila on Dhaka-Chittagong highway Thursday. The deceased could not be identified immediately. Police said a Dhaka bound bus from Homna plunged into a ditch as its driver lost control over the steering at about 10 am, killing a passenger on the spot. The injured passengers were rushed to different hospitals, reports UNB. One killed by stepbrother Sylhet, Oct 18: A man was killed allegedly by his stepbrother at Alapur village in Balaganj upazila Tuesday night. Police said Aklus Ali stabbed his stepbrother Nurul Islam, 25, when he was returning home from the local bazar at about 9pm leaving him critically injured. Hearing screams, local people rushed to the spot and admitted him to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where he died at about 10.30pm. Reason behind the killing could not be known immediately. A case was filed, reports UNB. One killed by BSF Thakurgaon, Oct 18: A man was gunned down by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Fakirganj frontier in Peerganj upazila early Thursday. The deceased was identified as Abdul Majid, 31, of Badambari-Kashua village in Baliadangi upazila of the district. Local people said when Abdul Majid along with his three associates went near the pillar no. 341/2F of the border BSF troops of Malon Camp sprayed bullets on them killing Majid on the spot. Later, BSF took away the body to their territory. Dinajpur Rifle Battalion-14 confirmed the incident and said that they have sent a protest letter to BSF, reports UNB. Valuables looted Pirojpur, Oct 18: Robbers stormed into a house at College Para in Kaukhali upazila of the district and looted valuables worth about Tk 5 lakh on Monday night. Sources said the gang numbering 12/15 entered into the house of college teacher Morshed Alam at dead of night breaking door open and looted Tk 15,000 in cash and other valuables including 13 tolas of gold ornaments keeping the family members hostage at gunpoint. The bandits also stabbed house owner Morshed, 40, and his relative Piyal, 32, when they tried to resist them. The injured were admitted to local hospital. A case was filed, reports UNB. Housewife beaten to death for dowry Magura, Oct 18: A housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband at Srikol village in Sripur upazila on Tuesday. Police quoting local people said Rafiqul Islam has been demanding Tk 1 lakh as dowry since his marriage two and half years back with Rupali Khatun, 22, daughter of Mahtab Munshi of Dighalia upazila of Khulna district. He used to torture her for dowry since their marriage. On the fateful day he asked her to bring the dowry money from her parents and on her refusal he beat her mercilessly leaving her dead on the spot.
