Eid-ul-Fitr observed in befitting manner in N'ganj , Rangpur

The Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated here as elsewhere in the country with due religious fervour and solemnity today.

The main Eid congregation was held at Jamtala Eid-gah Maidan under auspices of the District Administration and Narayanganj Paurasabha.

The first congregation was led by Dr Ibrahim Azad Siraji and the second congregation was led by Mauland Abdullah. Over fifty thousand devotees participated in the Jamaat.

Deputy Commissioner Faizul Kabir and Army Commander of Narayanganj Lieutenant Colonel Elias joined the congregation.

Congregations were also held at Tanbazar Jame Mosque, Nur Mosque, Court Mosque, Netaiganj Baitul Izzaat Jame Mosque and Khanpur play ground. Similar congregations were also held at Rupganj, Sonargao, Araittazar and Bandar upazilas. Special prayers were offered in these congregations for peace, progress and prosperity of the country.

Special diets were served among the orphanages, prisoners and hospitals here.

Roads were decorated with festoons and flags inscribed with 'Eid Mubarak' and 'Allahu Akbar'.

Important public and private buildings were illuminated on the occasion.

BSS, Rangpur adds: The greatest religious festival of the Muslims, Eid-ul-Fitr, was celebrated here and other adjoining northern districts today with due religious fervour, gaiety and solemnity.

The biggest Eid congregation was held at Rangpur Collectorate Eidgah where senior officials, leaders of political parties, elite of the city, professionals and journalists offered their Eid prayers.

The police Administrations took adequate steps and members of Police, Ansar-VDP, RAB, volunteers and other law enforcers were deployed everywhere for peaceful celebration of the Eid-ul- Fitr.

The other Eid congregations in Rangpur were held at Rangpur Police Line ground, Keramotia Mosque ground, Mulatol Madrasah ground, Munshipara Eidgah Math, Rangpur Zila School ground, Dhap Mohammadpur Jame Mosque ground, Alamnagar Wakf Mosque, Kamal Kachna Baro Jam-e-Masjid, Sadar Hospital Jame Mosque ground, Shalbon Mistripara Koilashranajan Math, Alamnagar Wakf Mosque, Keramotia Madrasha ground, Kedarer Pull ground, Mirbag Ramchandrapur Jame Mosque, Nachnia Jame Mosque, Damodarpur Baro Eidgah ground, Central Bus Terminal Jame Mosque and Mahiganj College ground. Besides, Eid Jamaats were held in all other seven upazila headquarters, Badarganj Karamotia Chandamari Jame Mosque, Pirgacha Karbala Eidgah Maidan, Pirgacha JN High School ground, Pirgacha Ahle Hadith Mosque, Satdorgah Mosque, Parul Chechakandi Orphanage ground, Kishamat Bishu Manjai Eidgah Maidan, Alambiditor Paikan Baro Jame Mosque ground and other places.

Similar reports of Eid celebrations were received from Nilphamari, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Bogra Joypurhat and Naogaon districts.

Thousands of Muslims offered special munajats seeking divine blessings and eternal peace of the departed souls, continued peace, progress, and prosperity of the country and Muslim Ummah.

National flag was hoisted atop all government and private buildings, the streets, roadsides and major buildings were illuminated last night and decorated with colourful flags and banners inscribed with Eid Mubarak.

Special and improved diets were served among the inmates of different hospitals, jails, Shishu Paribars, orphanages and vagrant welfare centres on the holy occasion.

Mosquito menace disrupts normal life in Thakurgaon

Mosquito menace has increased alarmingly in different places of the Thakurgaon district including the two municipal areas during the last three months causing untold sufferings to the people.

Ponds full of water hyacinth, stagnant and polluted water in drains, roadside ditches, heaps of garbage here and there and bushes have become the safe breeding places of mosquitoes.

With the advent of winter breeding of mosquitoes has increased alarmingly in the town but the authorities concerned have not taken adequate steps to check mosquito menace in the town, local people said.

Just after sunset scores of mosquitoes come out of their places and it is extremely difficult for the people of various professions to work peacefully. Students cannot concentrate on their studies due to the mosquitoes. Even in day time normal work is also hampered due to mosquito menace.

The people burdened with age and children are the worst sufferers, the slum dwellers who cannot buy mosquito nets bear the brunt of the menace.

Necessary steps should now be taken immediately to eradicate mosquito menace, they added.

Appointments of 121 employees, staffs of BCC cancelled

According to the investigation report of the ministry of local government appointments of 121 staffs and employees of Barisal City Corporation has been declared as void and files of other three officials asked to send to the ministry for further investigation.

Awlad Hossain Dilu, ward commissioner in charge of Mayor and Mehdi Hassan, chief executive officer of BCC acknowledging the facts said a letter signed by Delwar Hossain, senior assistant secretary of the ministry, had been reached before Eid vacation and BCC officially filed it on Wednesday.

Decisions in this regard would be followed according to the rules, regulations and instructions of the ministry, they added. In that letter it was stated that appointments of those 124 staffs, employees and officials of BCC were processed by Mayor Majibor Rahman Sarwar, from August 2003 up to August 2006 after he was elected as BCC Mayor in March 2003. The appointments were made without any organogram and manpower structure and also without any approval of the local government ministry or following any legal procedure. After declaration of emergency in the country allegations against those appointments in lieu of money, nepotism and political biasness were raised and local government ministry forming a one member inquiry team ordered Omar Faruk, additional divisional commissioner of Barisal to investigate the matter.

The investigation report was submitted to the ministry at the end July and the ministry after reviewing the report decided to cancel the appointments of 121 out of 124 appointments of those staffs and employees of BCC.

Meeting to eradicate monga held in Gaibandha

A meeting on mitigation of monga organised by District Administration was held at the conference room of district collectorate building on Thursday.

With Deputy Commissioner Quazi Anwarul Hakim in the chair, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Lt. Colonel Syed Fazley Ahmed Kader, deputy director of Department Agriculture Extension Abdul Matin, district relief and rehabilitation officer M. Rafique Ahmed, president of Gaibandha Chamber of Commerce and Industry Shahzada Anwarul Kadir and assistant general manager of Sonali Bank Ataur Rahman.

The speakers said due to the occurrence of monga in the district during the months of October and November almost every year the poor and the day labourers suffer from untold miseries.

They suggested various ways to eradicate monga by providing the jobless with jobs so that they earn a living.

Quazi Anwarul Hakim said special programmes have been undertaken to overcome the monga situation which included launching of special VGD, VGF programmes and food for work.

Housewife among three killed in separate incidents in dists

A housewife was killed by her husband in village Uzirpur under Pirganj upazila in the district on Thursday.

Police said Shahidul Islam, 38, son of late Abdul Latif of the village married Sheuly Begum, 26, daughter of Abul Hossain of nearby village Milanpur in Pirganj upazila several years ago. The husband frequently tortured his wife on minor issues and family matters since their marriage.

On the day, the husband beat his wife mercilessly and strangulated her to death. The villagers caught him and handed over him to police.

Brother of the victim Mahbubul Islam filed a murder case against the husband with Pirganj police station. The arrested was sent to jail hajat when produced before a Rangpur court, the sources said.

BSS, Dhaka adds: Two persons including a minor boy were killed in two separate road accidents at Baniachang in Hobiganj and Shibchhar in Madaripur districts today, police sources said.

The dead in Habiganj was identified as Pakul Mia, 4, son of Master Mia of Khatunpara of Baniachang area.

The sources said the accident took place when a jeep hit him while he was crossing Hobiganj-Baniachang road this afternoon. The driver of the jeep managed to flee. In another accident a speedy microbus knocked down an old man while he came out of his house on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Shibchhar in Madaripur district this morning.

The dead was identified as Amzad Pramanik, 65, of Bandarkhola village under Shannashirchhar area of Shibchhar upazila of the district.

Local people detained the driver of the microbus and handed over him to the local police.

Girl killed in stampede in rush for zakat money

BSS, Narayanganj

A minor girl was killed on the spot and several others were injured in a stampede during the distribution of Zakat money at West Chandmari in the DND project under Fatullah model police station on October 13 night.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Fatullah police station Bhuiya Mahbub Hasan said the victim was identified as Mosammat Moni, 10, daughter of Md Mukti Fakir of village Kachi Hara under Islampur upazila of Jamalpur district. She was living at West Talla of Narayanganj.

The ill-fated girl died in the stampede when about 200 persons were struggling to receive the Zakat money from the residence of Managing Director of the Fakir Apparels Fakir Aktaruzzaman on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. The OC said Fakir Aktaruzzaman was shocked at the incident and he gave adequate compensation to father of the victim Mukti Fakir, who is also a garment worker of the Fakir Apparels.

Relief goods distributed among flood-hit people in Lalmonirhat

Uttara Development Programme, a NGO, distributed relief goods among 1,100 flood victim families of Rajpur Union under Sadar upazila on Thursday assisted by Concern Worldwide and Irish Aid.

The Programme was arranged at Rajpur UP Complex premises attended by UNO sadar KM Ali Newaz UP chairman of Rajpur UP, Abdul Hai, Dr AKM Muraduzzaman of Concern Worldwide Bangladesh, project manager Suvash Chandra, Shah Alam UDP officials Bilu Kabir Aminul Islam and warrant officer of Joint Force Abdul Haque.

UDP distributed 30 kg rice, 3 kg Masur dal, 2 litre Soyabean oil, 1 kg salt, 1 bath soap, 2 washing soaps, 5 packets Ors and 10 packet biscuits. UDP will distribute to more 2200 families of other 3 unions.

20 wounded in Baraigram clash

A clash occurred between the villagers of Gormati and Shibpur of Baraigram upazila in the evening on October 7.

At least 20 persons were injured and taken to the different hospitals. Four of them were serious. They were Danesh Ali (24) son of Bilath Ali of the village Shibpur, Zomsed Ali (23) son of Zamal Ali of the village Gormati, Furkan Ali (30) son of Golgar Hossain of the village Gormati, Shah Alam (27) son of Afser Ali of the village Gormati.

About 600 people took port in clash with lathi, fala, hashua, etc. Acting on tip-off police officer Md Ramzan Ali with his forces went to the spot and controlled the situation. This clash began centring on fish-selling between Khaleque of Shibpur and Azmol Hossain of the village Gormati.

Body recovered in Gopalganj

Police recovered a dead body of one Mintu Shaikha (17), son of Islam Shaikh of village Sreenibash Kathi under Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj district from a water body under Chandhibaddi bridge on Muksudpur-Baraitala road on October 8 noon.

It is learnt that Mintu Shaikh remained untraced from October 6 afternoon Mintu Shaikh's relative said, Mintu had come out from his residence at 5-30 PM on October 6 and he remained untraced and his dead body was recovered by police from Chandhibaddi bridge on October 8 noon. Police sent Mintu's dead body to Gopalganj Sadar hospital for post mortem.

A case has been registered with Muksudpur PS in this connection.

One killed 3 hurt in Barisal road mishap

One tempo passengers killed and other three injured in a tempo-bus collision on Barisal-Dhaka highway on Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses and injured passenger sources said one Votvoti (locally made tempo) plying on Gournadi-Vurghata route collided face to face with a passenger coach of Hanif Poribahon plying on Dhaka-Barisal route at about 4-20 PM Wednesday afternoon at Tarakupi-Barthi area under Gournadi upazila on Barisal-Dhaka highway.

Miznur Rahman Sardar, 40, a passenger of the tempo killed at the spot and three others injured in this accident.

Among the injured Md. Aziz, 31, and another unidentified tempo passenger rushed to Barisal SBMCH in critical condition and both the drivers of tempo and bus managed to flee away and highway police of Gournadi station detained the transports and recovering the bodies of death and injured.

Reformist BNP leader Jahiruddin Swapan faced agitation by party activists

Jahiruddin Swapan, former lawmaker of Barisal-1 constituency and central leader of the reformist fraction of BNP, faced strong protest and agitation including chasing and throwing shoes of the party activists during his pre and post Eid visits in his election constituency.

However Jahiruddin Swapan denying the incidents said it were simple incidents of altercations between the two groups of party activists following the disputes over invitation.

Witnesses and party sources said Jahiruddin Swapan while came to attend a program of Iftar party of the party activists on Saturday at Pinglakaty area of Gournadi, supporters and protestors of reform and anti-reformist groups of local BNP engaged in altercation and chased Swapan.

On Monday afternoon when Swanpan went to attend a program of exchange of Eid greetings at Khanjapur area of Gournadi, local BNP activists of reformist and anti-reformist groups following altercations engaged in chasing and counter chasing and threw shoes on the car of Swapan.

Both the program was foiled following theses incidents, the sources added.

However Jahiruddin Swapan denying any assault or attack on him said the altercations were originated from the invitation procedure and arrangements of the program organizers and controlled by the senior leaders of the party and programs were held duly.

He also blamed Kuddus Akon and other anti-reformist leaders of local BNP for the incidents.

BRU and MMUJ condole death of Obaidul Haque

Two Income Tax employees suspended

Two local officials of the Income Tax Department were put under suspension on October 4 last by the higher authority.

An oficial source said, Mahammad Faruk Hussain, the MLSS (peon) of the Deputy Tax Commissioner's office Netrakona and Ratan Mia, the night guard of the same office were placed under suspension by the authority on charge of violating official discipline and code of conduct. Tax Commissioner of Dhaka tax region-5 Bashiruddin Ahmed issued the suspension order with affect from October-4 last, the official source added.



Fertiliser dealer arrested by Joint Forces

Joint forces arrested a fertilizer-dealer and a local fertiliser-trader from Shamganj Bazer area in Purbadhala upaizla of Netrakona district on October 3 last on charge of their involvement in selling various fertilizers including Urea fertilizer at higher prices in black markets. Police sources said, the arrested fertilizer dealer was identified as Muklesur Rahman (36) and the fertilizer trader was identified as Rukku Mia (45).

Acting on a secret information, a team of joint forces led by DGFI Major Sihab conducted an operation at the Shamganj Bazer and caught the fertiliser trader Rukku Mia red-handed while he was selling different fertilisers at higher prices than the government fixed prices and seized six bags of fertilizers from his possession. Then, the joint forces also caught the fertilizer declar Muklesur Rahman on the basis of the confessional statement of the Rukku Mia. Later, the two arrested dishonest businessmen were handed over to the Purbadhala Police Station by the joint forces. A case was recorded with Purbadhala Police Station against the two persons, the police sources added.



Reporters club hosts ifter party for newsmen

Netrakona reports club hosted an ifter party in honor of the Netrakona district based newspaers of national print and electronics media at a local Chinese restaurant here on October 4 last. A special prayer priror to the ifter was offered there seeking divine blessings for progress and prosperity of the Nation. District level officers, civil society members and leaders of different professional groups also attended the ifter mahfil as guests.



Declaration of six newspapers cancelled

The declaration of six newspapers published from Netrakona district has been cancelled for failing to publish regularly and not maintaining offices at the mentioned addresses. According to an official source, District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner Netrakona has issued an official order canceling the declaration of the six newspapers under Section 9 (3) of the printing press and publication (declaration and Registration Act of 1973). The six newspapers are weekly Muktir Pratik, weekly Netrakona, weekly Netrakona Kanta, weekly Netrakona Barta, Monthly Mohua Mon and Monthly Al-Eman, the source added.

UP chairman arrested

Nilphamari, Oct 9: Joint Forces arrested a UP chairman and five members for black marketing rice allocated under VGF(Vulnerable Group Feeding) card in Dhimla upazila here Monday. The arrested were-chairman of Nautara union parishad Mosharref Hossain Mintu and UP members-Abdur Salam, Tahidul Islam, Abdur Sattar, Asiruddin and Salehin.

Sources said the UP chairman and members distributed 8 kgs of rice instead of 10 kg per person among 2500 poor people under VGF card on Sunday, reports UNB.



One sentenced to death

Panchagarh, Oct 9: A court here has sentenced a man to death for killing his wife about 12 years ago. The Additional District and Sessions Judge Court also fined the condemned convict, Chan Mia, Tk 20,000, in absentee. According to the prosecution, Chan Mia of Kaukhali village in Boda upazila strangled his wife and dumped the body under the sands of a river on March 15, 1996 as she failed to meet his dowry demand. After the killing Chan Mia went into hiding.

Later, the victim's father filed a case with the respective police station, reports UNB.



One hacked to death

Narsingdi, Oct 9: Armed robbers hacked a man to death while committing robbery in a house at Ghoradia village in Sadar upazila early Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Sawdagar Mia, 60. Local sources said a group of robbers, numbering 20/25, stormed the house of Sawdager Mia by breaking open the door at about 1am and tied up the inmates. They also severely beat up the inmates and started looting valuables. As Sawdager Mia tried to resist them, the bandits hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot. The gang then left the house with Tk 50,000 in cash, gold ornaments and other valuables. On their way, the dacoits stormed the house of Jhantu Mia in the same village and looted valuables over Tk 1 lakh. Police recovered the body on Tuesday morning and sent it to morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.



BDR-BSF exchanges gunfire

Satkhira, Oct 9: Indian Border Security Force(BSF) and Bangladesh Rifles exchanged gunfire on Taluigaccha frontier in sadar upazila Monday midnight. BDR sources said as BSF members of Tarali camp fired 10 rounds of bullet towards Bangladesh border without any provocation near main pillar no-13/3 BDR members retaliated with 10 rounds. None was injured during the exchange of fire. Tension has been prevailing along the border, reports UNB.



UP chairman in Netrakona arrested

Netrakona, Oct 9: The detective branch police of the district arrested a union parishad chairman and his two associates from Rouha area under Sadar upazila on October 10 on charges of selling relief rice in black market. Police said, acting on a secret information, a team of plain clothed BD men cordoned off Rouha union parisahd office and caught chairman Makbul Hussain and his two associates red-handed while they were selling relief rice. The associates were identified as Debdulal Sarker and Zitendra Sarker. Later, they were handed over to the Netrakona Model Police. A case also field in this connection.
