News briefs 13 robbers arrested TANGAIL, Oct 5: Police arrested 13 activists of a robber gang while they were taking preparation to commit robbery in Kalihati Upazila Tuesday night Police said acting on a tip-off that a gang of inter-district robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery near Haripur Bridge on Tangail-Mymensingh road they raided the area and arrested the robbers. They arrested were identified as Sharif, Billal, Golam Quddus, Hannan, Moslemuddin, Alaluddin, Harun-or-Rashid, Abu Yusuf, Hedayet Hossain, Shahid Mia, Selim Mia, Billal Sawdagar and Siddiqur Rahman. Police also seized their microbus and one motorcycle from the spot Another report from Narayanganj adds: Robbers swooped on a sand laden trawler on Balu river and looted cash and valuables from its passengers leaving three people including trawler owner injured on Sunday night, reports UNB. Housewife commits suicide CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Oct 5: A housewife allegedly commited suicide by jumping under the wheels of a running train at Ghion Downpara in Nachole upazila Tuesday. Witnesses said Furkun Nesa, 26, wife of Setabur Rahman of same area, took her own life at about 11:30 PM. Local people Setabur Rahman used to torture her for dowry money since long. On the fateful he again tortured her mercilessly for refusing to bring the dowry money from her parents. They said failing to bear the frequent repression Furkun went to the nearby rail line and jumped under wheels of Amnura bound local train coming from Nachole. The body was sent to hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed, reports UNB. Clash leaves one killed, 36 injured HABIGANJ, Oct 5: A bloody clash between two rival groups left a man killed and 36 others injured at village Fatehpur in Ajmiriganj Upazila here on Monday. Local people said there was a longstanding rivalry between Ajmiriganj pourashava ward commissioner Majid Mia and his neighbor Khaleq Mia over demarcation lines of their respective houses. In the afternoon a quarrel ensued between the children of both the houses over a trifling mater and later a fierce clash took place between the elders that left Lajat Ali, 30, supporter of Khaleq Mia dead on the spot, reports UNB. Workshop on children held BARGUNA, Oct 5: An orientation workshop for security and socio-economic development of children and women was held at Burirchar union parishad office in Sadar upazila Tuesday. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer AHM Shafiquzzaman was present as chief guest at the workshop, which was chaired by district Information Officer Mahfuzur Rahman. Journalists, teachers and public representatives participated in the workshop arranged by district Information office. Five traders held SYLHET, Oct 5: Five businessmen were arrested and 13,000 litres of adulterated edible oil recovered in Kalighat area of the city Monday. BSTI officials in cooperation with RAB and district administration raided the Chowdhury market in the area and recovered the adulterated edible oil worth over Tk 15 lakh at night The arrested traders were identified as Babul Mia, owner of Saimon Enterprise, Sushil Chandra Roy, owner of Selina Traders, Bijit Babu, Subhash and Asik Mia. Almost all the shops in the market have long been engaged in selling the adulterated edible oil using the labels of reputed companies, local people said, reports UNB.
