One person was sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment by a court for murdering a person three years ago.

District and Sessions Judge Motahar Hossain delivered the judgment in a crowded courtroom on Tuesday. The convict was identified as Azizul Hoque, 40, son of Didar Mondol of Botiapara village of Alamdanga upazila in the district

The court also fined the convict Taka 20,000, in default to suffer one more year in prison. Four other accused were acquited as charges against them could not be proved.

The prosecution story in brief, is that, one Aliuzzaman, son of Noor Islam of Khadimpur village under Alamdanga upazila was killed on November 10, 2004.

A murder case was filed with Alamdanga police station accusing five persons.

After examining 10 witnesses and relevant evidences the judge pronounced the verdict on Tuesday.

BSS Barguna adds: Police arrested two alleged muggers from Sadar Road in the town on Monday.

The arrested are Afzal Pahlwan, 28, of Maitha village under Sadar upazila and Shawkat, 21, of Khajurtala village of the same upazila.

Police said they picked up the two while they were taking preparation for mugging in the area.

BSS Jessore reports: Detective Brach (DB) of police arrested a man with 1.5 kgs of hashish from Palbari area in the town on Tuesday.

Police said a mobile team of the DB police during their regular patrol nabbed one Tariqul Islam, 25, on suspicion while he was carrying a bag at Palbari crossing. Later, they recovered the hashish searching his bag.

Tariqul is the son of Hazrat Ali of Pakuria village in Kushtia district

The DB police handed over Tariqul to the local thana. A case was lodged in this connection.

BSS Rangpur adds: Police arrested 23 persons including absconding convicts from various places of all eight upazilas in Rangpur district during the past 24 hours till Tuesday noon.

Police said the arrested persons include listed terrorists, drug smugglers, addicts, gamblers, absconding convicts and accused persons in different cases, drug-peddlers, thieves and other anti-social elements.

Police also recovered huge quantities of narcotics substances including ganja, mini ganja packs, phensidyl, locally produced wine, robbed goods and other illegal things during the drives.

Pirganj police arrested absconding convict Tazul Islam, Gangachara police arrested absconding convict Mominur and Badarganj police arrested absconding convict Moktarul during the period.

Kotwali police arrested five persons; Taraganj two, Gangachara three, Badarganj one, Mithapukur two, Pirganj three, Pirgacha three and Kawnia police arrested three persons during the period.

The arrested persons were sent to jail hajat when police produced them before different Rangpur courts on Tuesday, the source said.
