Geeti Ara for proper coordination in flood rehabilitation

Adviser for Social Welfare, Women and Children Affairs Geeti Ara Safiya Chowdhury on day underscored the need for maintaining proper coordination for bringing success in the flood rehabilitation activities.
"The government is providing allout support to the flood victims as they can overcome their losses as soon as possible," she said this while exchanging views with officials of the district and members of the civil society in the conference room of the deputy commissioner here.
The view-exchange meeting was organised to review the progress of the relief and rehabilitation programmes in the district
The adviser asked the concerned officials to ensure the supply of fertilisers, seeds, loan and agri-inputs as the farmers can get those in time.
The participants in the meeting drew atention of the adviser to the different problems of the district, including river erosion and supply of fertiliser as per demand.
The adviser assured them of taking necessary measures in this regard.
Geeti Ara distributed Taka 4.50 lakh among 90 flood-affected people for constriction of houses, agriculture inputs among 10 flood-hit farmers and food items among 170 flood victims at Uzanchar UP complex under Goalonda upazila here.
Earlier, the adviser visited Rajbari Government Shishu Paribar (Girl) and distributed sewing machines among 25 trained women.

CPDCC distributes reflecting stickers for avoiding accidents

Community Policing District Coordination Commitee (CPDCC) started distributing the reflecting stickers among the van drivers and rickshaw pullers in the district aimed at avoiding road accidents at night
Police Super Saleh Mohamad Tanvir inaugurated the programme on the premises of his office of the town here on Friday night by using some stickers on the bodies of the vans and rickshaws. Additional Police Super M. Anisur Rahman, convenor of CPDCC M. Abdus Salam and member secretary Advocate Sekendar Azam Anam were also present on the occasion.
Talking to BSS, Police Super Saleh Mohammad Tanvir said most of the vans and rickshaws do not have lamps causing road accidents are increasing at night In order to avoid the road accidents at night CPDCC has taken up this step, he also said.
The reflecting stickers used on the bodies of the vehicles would be glitered at night that would help the van drivers, rickshaw pullers and passengers to avoid accidents on the road, he further said.
Initially, as many as 5000 stickers would be distributed among the drives to use those on the bodies particularly back side of their vehicles, he further added.
Cordial relationship among menopausal women stressed

Noted gynaecologists and senior doctors in women health said menopause, that is cessation of women's periodic uterine bleeding is a difficult but quite a normal and natural transition of their life cycles. Every woman, in general, has to experience the menopausal phase in her life, which usually begins at the age from 45 to 55 years. Gradual decrease in female hormones causes such bodily and physiologically changed conditions in females which primarily appear through irregularities and some other changes in her menstrual flow leading to menopause.
These were revealed in an awareness meeting on menopause at Mymensingh Medical College
Hospital (MMCH) recently atended by over 200 women from different professions including school and college teachers, Bankers, Physicians, Nurses, NGO officials and house wives, Bangladesh menopause Society and its MMCH unit organised the program.
Director of MMCH Brig. Gen. Dr. Maung Tin Win, ndc,was present as the chief guest with Head of gynaecology department Dr. Kamrun Nahar in the Chairman. Noted physicians Prof. Sahala Khatun, Prof. Latifa Shamsuddin, Brig. Gen (Rtd) Dr. Suraiya Rahman, Prof. Arzumand Banu, Prof. Roushan Ara Begum, Dr. Ginnatun Nur and Dr. Mojibur Rahman Khan Hira, among others spoke in the meeting conducted by Gynae Registrar of MMCH Dr. Ayesha Beg.
Mentioning the elderly citizens including the women of menopausal age as precious assets and inspiring resources in our efforts for the national development, both at individual and national level, the chief guest Brig. Gen. Dr. Maung Tin Win, ndc, in his speech stressed upon the cultivation of culture of showing gratitude'Jf , cordial manner; and maintaining hearty relationship with them, particularly with elderly women. Dr. Maung urged upon all including the health service providers to accelerate their initiatives in ensuring the services deserved by the menopausal women for living decent lives and expend the awareness activities up to the remote places of the country where litle knowledge about menopause exists.
A number of lectures highlighting menopause related issues were presented in the meeting aimed at creating awareness titled "Social aspect of Menopause and Urogenital Problems, menopause and Osteoporosis, menopause and Psychological aspect and Bangladesh Menopause Society (BMS)". Later, the expert resource person answered to the queries of the participants and shared opinions to give a clear picture on pre and postmenopausal conditions of women.
27 nabbed on various charges in four dists

One person was sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment by a court for murdering a person three years ago.
District and Sessions Judge Motahar Hossain delivered the judgment in a crowded courtroom on Tuesday. The convict was identified as Azizul Hoque, 40, son of Didar Mondol of Botiapara village of Alamdanga upazila in the district
The court also fined the convict Taka 20,000, in default to suffer one more year in prison. Four other accused were acquited as charges against them could not be proved.
The prosecution story in brief, is that, one Aliuzzaman, son of Noor Islam of Khadimpur village under Alamdanga upazila was killed on November 10, 2004.
A murder case was filed with Alamdanga police station accusing five persons.
After examining 10 witnesses and relevant evidences the judge pronounced the verdict on Tuesday.
BSS Barguna adds: Police arrested two alleged muggers from Sadar Road in the town on Monday.
The arrested are Afzal Pahlwan, 28, of Maitha village under Sadar upazila and Shawkat, 21, of Khajurtala village of the same upazila.
Police said they picked up the two while they were taking preparation for mugging in the area.
BSS Jessore reports: Detective Brach (DB) of police arrested a man with 1.5 kgs of hashish from Palbari area in the town on Tuesday.
Police said a mobile team of the DB police during their regular patrol nabbed one Tariqul Islam, 25, on suspicion while he was carrying a bag at Palbari crossing. Later, they recovered the hashish searching his bag.
Tariqul is the son of Hazrat Ali of Pakuria village in Kushtia district
The DB police handed over Tariqul to the local thana. A case was lodged in this connection.
BSS Rangpur adds: Police arrested 23 persons including absconding convicts from various places of all eight upazilas in Rangpur district during the past 24 hours till Tuesday noon.
Police said the arrested persons include listed terrorists, drug smugglers, addicts, gamblers, absconding convicts and accused persons in different cases, drug-peddlers, thieves and other anti-social elements.
Police also recovered huge quantities of narcotics substances including ganja, mini ganja packs, phensidyl, locally produced wine, robbed goods and other illegal things during the drives.
Pirganj police arrested absconding convict Tazul Islam, Gangachara police arrested absconding convict Mominur and Badarganj police arrested absconding convict Moktarul during the period.
Kotwali police arrested five persons; Taraganj two, Gangachara three, Badarganj one, Mithapukur two, Pirganj three, Pirgacha three and Kawnia police arrested three persons during the period.
The arrested persons were sent to jail hajat when police produced them before different Rangpur courts on Tuesday, the source said.
Int'l Literacy Day observed in Moulvibazar

International Literacy Day was observed recently in Moulvibazar. with a slogan, 'Literacy for Decent Life. A big procession was brought out from the Collectorate building here in the morning to mark the occasion. Students of different educational institutions, government officials, NGO workers and people of various professions took part Processionists carried colourful festoons and placards with them and paraded different streets in the town.
SEDA a local NGO, organised a discussion at the Moulvibazar Pourshava auditorium. SEDA president Md Mujbur Rahman presided the discussion while Moulvibazar Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Alkama Siddeque addressed as chief guest Taslema Akthar read out a key-note paper.

Naming of Ctg city road after Yusuf Chy demanded

Speakers at a memorial meeting here on Wednesday urged the concerned authorities to name an important road of the port city and a hall of the Chitagong Veterinary and Animal Science University (CVASI) after Chairman of the Daily Purbakone late Mohammad Yousuf Chowdhury.
They said late Yousuf Chowdhury was not only a leading figure in the country's newspaper industry but also one of the pioneers, who made tremendous contribution in the rapid improvement of the dairy and poultry industry in the region and development of greater Chitagong.
Chitagong Metropolitan Union of Journalists (CMUJ) organised the meeting on Mohammad Yousuf Chowdhury, who died in the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia last month.

13 robbers arrested
TANGAIL, Oct 5: Police arrested 13 activists of a robber gang while they were taking preparation to commit robbery in Kalihati Upazila Tuesday night Police said acting on a tip-off that a gang of inter-district robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery near Haripur Bridge on Tangail-Mymensingh road they raided the area and arrested the robbers. They arrested were identified as Sharif, Billal, Golam Quddus, Hannan, Moslemuddin, Alaluddin, Harun-or-Rashid, Abu Yusuf, Hedayet Hossain, Shahid Mia, Selim Mia, Billal Sawdagar and Siddiqur Rahman. Police also seized their microbus and one motorcycle from the spot Another report from Narayanganj adds: Robbers swooped on a sand laden trawler on Balu river and looted cash and valuables from its passengers leaving three people including trawler owner injured on Sunday night, reports UNB.
Housewife commits suicide
CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Oct 5: A housewife allegedly commited suicide by jumping under the wheels of a running train at Ghion Downpara in Nachole upazila Tuesday. Witnesses said Furkun Nesa, 26, wife of Setabur Rahman of same area, took her own life at about 11:30 PM. Local people Setabur Rahman used to torture her for dowry money since long. On the fateful he again tortured her mercilessly for refusing to bring the dowry money from her parents. They said failing to bear the frequent repression Furkun went to the nearby rail line and jumped under wheels of Amnura bound local train coming from Nachole. The body was sent to hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed, reports UNB.
Clash leaves one killed, 36 injured
HABIGANJ, Oct 5: A bloody clash between two rival groups left a man killed and 36 others injured at village Fatehpur in Ajmiriganj Upazila here on Monday. Local people said there was a longstanding rivalry between Ajmiriganj pourashava ward commissioner Majid Mia and his neighbor Khaleq Mia over demarcation lines of their respective houses. In the afternoon a quarrel ensued between the children of both the houses over a trifling mater and later a fierce clash took place between the elders that left Lajat Ali, 30, supporter of Khaleq Mia dead on the spot, reports UNB.

BARGUNA, Oct 5: An orientation workshop for security and socio-economic development of children and women was held at Burirchar union parishad office in Sadar upazila Tuesday. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer AHM Shafiquzzaman was present as chief guest at the workshop, which was chaired by district Information Officer Mahfuzur Rahman. Five traders held
SYLHET, Oct 5: Five businessmen were arrested and 13,000 litres of adulterated edible oil recovered in Kalighat area of the city Monday. BSTI officials in cooperation with RAB and district administration raided the Chowdhury market in the area and recovered the adulterated edible oil worth over Tk 15 lakh at night The arrested traders were identified as Babul Mia, owner of Saimon Enterprise, Sushil Chandra Roy, owner of Selina Traders, Bijit Babu, Subhash and Asik Mia. Almost all the shops in the market have long been engaged in selling the adulterated edible oil using the labels of reputed companies, local people said, reports UNB.
