Husband, wife jailed

BARISAL, Oct 3: A court here on Sunday sentenced a man to seven years and his wife to three years rigorous imprisonment for possessing illegal drugs. The court also fined the convicts Abdul Motalib, 45, and his wife Shahana Begum Jharna, 35, Tk 3,000 each, in default, to suffer three months RI more. Another accused Nurjahan Begum was acquited from the case as allegations brought against her could not be proved, reports UNB.



Mystery shrouds death of housewife

SATKHIRA, Oct 3: Mystery shrouded the death of a newly wed housewife whose body was found in hanging condition at village Mirgang in Shyamnagar Upazila on Sunday. On information, police recovered the body of Naz-e-Sultana alias Mukta, 23, wife of Ruhul Quddus of the village in Shyamnagar hanging from a ceiling fan. After preliminary investigation, police suspected that Quddus beat his wife Mukta to death and hanged the body from the ceiling fan of his house as she failed to bring dowry money from her parent's house. Family sources said Mukta, daughter of M Mozam Gazi of Sora village, married Ruhul Quddus six months back but she was sent back to her parent's house several times for dowry, reports UNB.



Four cloth traders arrested

KHULNA, Oct 3: Rapid Action Batalion members arrested four cloth traders along with a truck loaded with Indian three-piece worth Tk 5 lakh on Khulna-Rupsa bypass road on Sunday evening. The arrested were identified as Babul, 40, Abdul Aziz, 45, Saiful Islam, 38, and truck driver Mostafa. Later, the arrested cloth traders and seized truck and cloths were handed over to the Batiaghata Police. Police said the cloth traders were bringing the three-piece from India ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, reports UNB.



Teenaged boy commits suicide

SYLHET, Oct 3: A teenaged schoolboy allegedly commited suicide by hanging himself at Khilgaon village in Jakiganj Upazila on Saturday afternoon. Family sources said Mohiuddin Chowdhury, 15, son of Ahad Chowdhury of the village, also a student of class nine of Moulvi Mair Ali High School, hanged himself from the ceiling of his room with a scarf at about 1:30 PM. Family members sensing something wrong broke the door of his room open and found his hanging body, reports UNB.



One killed by neighbour

SYLHET, Oct 3: A middle aged man was killed as his nieghbour hit him with a stick following an altercation at Pashchim Par village in Bianibazar Upazila on Saturday night Police said an altercation took place between Ashikur Rahman Ashik, 28, son of Sirajuddin of the village and his neighbour Jahuruddin, 55, at a shop at a local market on Saturday night over changing TV channel. At one stage, Ashik severely hit Jahuruddin with a stick leaving him critically injured. The victim died on way to the Upazila Health Complex, reports UNB.



Minor girl killed

in road mishap

BARISAL, Oct 3: A minor girl was crushed under the wheels of a truck at Dhan Gabeshona Road in the city on Sunday noon. Police said Sweety, 8, daughter of M Faruk, constable of detective branch police, was run over and killed by a sand-laden truck when she was crossing the road at about 1 PM. Police seized the truck but the driver managed to flee the scene. Police sent the body to hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed, reports UNB.
