The High Court on Wednesday declared illegal the detention of Nurul Islam Babul, chairman of Jamuna Group. A division bench comprising Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury ordered the government to release Babul forthwith if he is not wanted in any other cases. The order came upon a habeas corpus petition filed by Barrister Rafiqul Huq on behalf of Babul.

Babul, also owner of daily Jugantor, was arrested on February 22 and sent to jail on detention under the Special Powers Act He faces a number of corruption cases.
