News Briefs Gazipur, Sept 21: Eight children, who worked as camel jockeys in the United Arab Emirates, were given compensation in the district on Thursday. The children are Saiful Haque Jonny and Bahadur Ronny of Sreepur upazila, Badal, Jewel, Milon and Shahadat of Sadar upazila, and Sadir and Sakib of Kapasia upazila. Deputy Commissioner Syed Mizanur Rahman handed over cheques to them for their rehabilitation in the society, reports UNB. Garment worker drowns Savar, Sept 21: A garment worker drowned in a boat capsize at Banstali in the upazila on Wednesday. The victim was identified as Sharifa Begum, 20, daughter of Sadek Ali of Shariatpur district and a worker of Doyel group in Savar municipal area. Police said Sharifa along with some other garment workers were going to their workplace by a boat in the morning which caught by a strong current capsized, reports UNB. One gets life for violating girl Magura, Sept 21: A tribunal here Thursday convicted a man and awarded him life term imprisonment for violating a girl after abduction. The convict was identified as Kamal Hossain, son of Rawshan Ali, of Bengaberail village in Sadar uapzila. According to prosecution, Kamal Hossain picked up Shilpi, 13, (not real name) from the village. He took the girl to Dhaka and raped her. Police later rescued the victim and arrested lecher Kamal. A case was filed. After examining the records and witnesses, District and Sessions Judge and Judge of the Special Tribunal M Kader Newaz handed down the verdict, reports UNB. One held for taking bribe Pirojpur, Sept 21:Joint forces arrested an employee of district income tax office on Wednesday on charge of taking bribe from a man. Sources said the joint forces caught Nurul Haque, notice server of the office, from Bazaar Road area in the town at about 3pm while receiving Tk 5,000 as bribe from a man in the name of solving his income tax problem. He was later handed over Sadar thana police. A case was filed in this connection, reports UNB Valuables guted Barisal, Sept 21: A devastating fire that broke out at Alif-Lam-Mim coton at Gobordhan in Gournadi upazila here on Thursday guted valuables worth Tk one lakh. Local people said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at about 1-45 pm and guted some valuable machines of the mill. On information, fire fighters rushed to the spot and extinguished the flame within half an hour with the help of local people. Two people were injured while extinguishing the flame, sources said, reports UNB. Smuggled goods seized Joypurhat, Sept 22: Rapid Action Batalion (RAB) arrested four persons and seized huge quantity of smuggled goods in different drives in the bordering areas in the district during the last 14 hours ending on Friday evening. RAB source said they arrested Rabeya, 40, Lokman Ali, 24, Abdul Fakir, 48, and Harunur Rashid, 30, for carrying smuggled goods and drugs from India, Reports BSS. Four nabbed Brahmanbaria, Sept 22: District police arrested four persons of an organized gang who lifted sand illegally from the river Meghna on Friday. The law enforcers said that an organized gang has been lifting sand illegally since long from the government land at Meghna river in Kadarkhola area under the Nabinagar upazila. Police also seized MV Norium-2, a dredger, is being used to lift the sand from the river, report BSS.
