River erosion has taken serious turn with recession of flood waters in Lalmonirhat

Kalmati under Sadar Upazila of the district is now under threat the erosion of the River Teesta to devour into the riverbed. Everyday at least five or seven houses of the area are being devoured into the riverbed, leaving the people with great concern.

On the other hand, the people of the area have been shifting their houses to a safer place. A total of 168 houses have already been eroded due to recent raging floods and erosion in Teesta River, making partial dame to another 92 houses.

At Mogolhat village under Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila erosion by the River Dharla devoured a big stretch of the Mogholat-Kulaghat Flood Protection embankment under Sadar Upazila of the district on Friday noon.

Local people said four shops situated on the bank of the River were washed away by the strong current of the river.The locals are apprehending that if urgent measures were not taken to stop the erosion about three hundred shops will be devoured by the river any time.

Meanwhile the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has distributed seeds of six varieties of vegetables among 220 flood-affected farmers in the district as part of the government's post-flood rehabilitation programme.

The government has allocated Taka 2.50 crore to carry out the post- flood rehabilitation programme in the district

Deputy Commissioner of Natore SM Ahshan Kabir distributed seeds among the farmers at a programme organised on the Sadar Upzila premises today.

Presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahmud Shahin, the inaugural function was also addressed, by DAE Deputy Director AKM Shakhawat Hossain.
