Bangabandhu murder case: SC allows convicts’ leave to appeal
Staff Reporter The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday granted leave to appeal filed by five convicts against their death sentences in Bangabandhu Murder Case. Granting the leave to appeal or pre-appeal hearing, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division comprising Justice Md Tafazzul Islam, Justice Md Joynul Abedin and Justice Md Hasan Ameen allowed the appeal after 26 days of hearing, which began on August 7. The court in its order asked the convicts and their lawyers to file paper books for a regular appeal hearing by October 30.  |

Staff Reporter The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday summoned eight former ministers of the past BNP-Jamaat led 4-party alliance government in connection with the graft case filed against detained former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko. Meanwhile, six co-accused of Khaleda Zia, including AMM Shahadat Hossain, former Chairman of Chitagong Port Authority (CPA), arrested on Saturday were sent to jail.  |
Workers' unrest continues: Sit-in in front of BGMEA office
Staff Reporter Several hundred workers of Nasa Garments yesterday staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the BGMEA Office in the city to press home their nine-point demands, including Eid bonus, enhanced Iftar and tiffin allowances. They also strongly protested the sudden closure of the Nasa Garments without paying the dues of the workers. As the Nasa Group authorities declined to accept the workers' demands, some 3,600 workers have become unemployed following the closure of the factories. The workers alleged that the owners had been trying to evade their responsibilities terming their movement a "conspiracy.  |
Unplanned urbanisation causes traffic jam
Staff Reporter The absence of decentralisation of the administration and unplanned urbanisation are the main causes of the chronic traffic jam in the city, which kills a lot of productive time of the city dwellers. Experts said this yesterday at a roundtable meeting on 'Remedies to Create Suitable Environment for Plying Public Transport, Non Motorised Vehicles' and Walking' organised by Save Environment Movement (SEM) at the National Press Club.  |
Inclement weather disrupts life in Barisal region
Barisal Correspondent Continuous downpour and gusty wind has disrupted normal life making agriculture, fishing and communications uncertain in the Barisal region since Friday night Barisal city experienced light to moderate rainfall, which created problems for the city dwellers, office goers and the poor. Atendance in offices, courts and educational institutions was less than normal. Water level of the river Kirtonkhola is touching the danger level. Roads in the city remained submerged in rainwater. Barisal Port authority hoisted cautionary signal No.2.  |

Sports Reporter The final of the First ICC World Twenty20 Championship will be held today which begins at 6.00 PM (Bangladesh Standard Time) at Johannesburg in South Africa. Pakistan and India, the two powerhouses of world Cricket, will face each other in the final. Bangladesh Television, ESPN, Star Cricket will telecast the match live from the capital of South Africa. Pakistan cruised into the final defeating New Zealand by six wickets in the first semifinal on September 22. On the other hand, India stormed into the final beating Australia by 15 runs in the second semifinal on the same day.  |
