News Briefs UNB, Jamalpur Sept 19: A court here Tuesday awarded a man and his mother death sentence for killing his wife for dowry three years ago. The court also fined the convicts Mehdi Hasan Khan Masum and his mother Farida Begum of Golapbagh area of the district town Tk 1 lakh each. According to the prosecution, Masum and his family members locked in an altercation with his wife Sanjida Nur-e-Jannat Kakon on July 20, 2004 as she refused to bring Tk two lakh from his father as dowry. At one stage Masum and his mother beat her mercilessly and strangulated her to death. Later, they took the body to Sadar hospital and fled away, reports UNB. Man beaten to death in Bagerhat UNB, Bagerhat Sept 19: A young man was beaten to death allegedly by his rivals at a shrimp enclosure in Rampal upazila early Tuesday. The dead was identified as Salim Fakir, 32, son of Noor Ali. Locals said there had a longstanding dispute between Salim's family members and their neighbor Keramat Ali over the ownership of a plot of land. Salim's family members alleged Keramat and his musclemen kidnapped Salim when he went out of his house after taking Seheri. Later, they took him to the nearby shrimp enclosure and beat him to death. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed, reports UNB Woman killed in road accident UNB, Nilphamari Sept 19: A woman, who went to Sonarai Bazar in Domar upazila to talk to her daughter in capital by cell phone, was crushed under the wheels of a truck on Tuesday. Majida Khatun, wife of Ayub Ali of Khanabari village in the upazila, died on the spot as a truck hit her while she was crossing the road in the morning to go to a mobile phone shop. Vehicular movement on the road remained stopped for one hour following the accident A case was filed, reports UNB. Engineer drowned in Kushiara river UNB, Sylhet Stept 19: Engineer of Public Health Engineering Department in Jakiganj upazila Jotindra Kumar Biswas drowned in boat capsize in Kushiara River while carrying relief goods for flood victims Tuesday. Local people said Biswas along with some volunteers was going to distribute relief goods by a boat and at one stage caught by a storm it sank at Hatidhar area in the afternoon. The volunteers managed to swim ashore but Biswas remained missing. Police after hectic search recovered the body on Wednesday morning, reports UNB Six sacks of OMS rice seized UNB, Barisal, Sept 19: Police seized six sacks of OMS rice and arrested two people in Muladi upazila Monday morning. Mehdi Hasan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Mahbubur Rahman , Officer-in-Charge of Muladi thana, said Mainuddin, dealer for Kutubpur area of the upazila sold six sacks of OMS rice secretly to local rice trader Azaharuddin. The rice was carried to Muladi bandar by a trawler and when it was unloading upazila administration with the help of police raided the trawler and arrested Azahar along with the trawler owner Altaf Hossain, reports UNB. Slaughterhouses opened UNB, Barisal, Sept 19: Barisal City Corporation (BCC) Monday opened six slaughterhouses to ensure supply of standard meat among the consumers. Jahangir Hossain Molla, health and sanitary inspector of BCC, said the temporary slaughterhouses were opened at Puran Bazaar, Bangla Bazaar, Chowmatha Bazaar, Sagordi Bazaar, Natun Bazaar and Kashipur Bazaar of the city in hygienic condition. He said 15 staff members of BCC have been given a three-day training for slaughtering animals in hygienic way, reports UNB
