Eight die after taking potka fish in N'ganj

Eight people died and eight others fell sick in Araihazar and Rupganj upazilas Friday after eating poisonous 'potka' fish with their meals on Thursday night

Local sources said a number of families Thursday evening bought 'potka' fish from Golakandail hat, a village market situated in between the two upazilas. After taking the fishes with their meals on Thursday night, they fell sick and died the following morning.

The deceased were identified as Jamir Ali, 65, his son Lokman, 42, and grand daughter Alpana, 10, of Berikandi village in Rupganj upazila, and Motaleb Mia, 60, and his wife Fatema Begum, 55, of Rainadi village, Suruj Mia, 55, of Kumarpara, and Serajol, 60, and Noor-e-Alam, 22, of Boliapara in Araihazar upazila. Alpana's two sisters Bilkis, 16, and Arifa, 14, Meer Box, 50, his wife Shukkuri Begum, 42, and Jahangir, 7, of Rupganj, and Monir, 22, Shariful, 15, and Qashem, 55, of Araihazar also fell sick after eating poisonous 'potka' fish. All of them have been sent to Dhaka for beter treatment
