Lalmonirhat AED starts distribution of saplings to flood-affected farmers

The Lalmonirhat Agriculture Extension Department started distribution sapling of aman paddy to flood hits farmers at different flood hits areas in the district at noon on Tuesday for planting aman paddy again at damaged fields. Only 2 thousand flood hits farmers in 30 thousands farmers geting sapling to plant again in their damaged land. But rest 28 thousand flood hits farmers facing frustration over planting aman paddy in again in their damaged lands resulting they thinking how they overcome coming Ashwin- Kartik monga.

The Lalmonirhat AED on Tuesday noon distributed sapling of HY Navijat variety aman paddy " Bina Shail" among the flood hits farmers at Barobari, Kulaghat and Rajpur union under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila. The Lalmonirhat DC Rafiqul Islam and the Army camp commander Major Mahfuzur Rahaman in their hand distributed saplings.

The AED Deputy Director Aftab Uddin Khan told that 2 thousand flood hits farmers of 20 flood hits unions of five upazila in Lalmonirhat would be received saplings for planting one bigha of damaged land, making them very smile face. The farmers will harvest this variety paddy in the same time in Bangla month Kartik, DD told.

Rajob Ali, a flood hits farmer of Bowalmari char under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila came for receiving saplings given by AED official at Kulaghat union parishad premise told ," My eight bighas land of standing aman paddy have been damage for two times by flood water. There is not alternative option to cultivate damaged land in again through making seedbed again due to shortage of time. And I have no financial support to purchase aman saplings to cultivate my damaged land in again. Lalmonirhat AED gives me only some saplings for planting on one bigha land, that is not sufficient for me."

Some flood hits farmers who came from Bowalmari char, Char Kulaghat village, char Bongram villages at Kulaghat union parishad premise for geting aman paddy saplings told this correspondent that they did not get saplings due to AED officials did not enlist their name, resulting they returned back to home in empty.

Of them Hares Ali, a flood hits farmer of Char Kulaghat village told," my four bighas land standing aman crops have been damaged by floodwater. I came here at Kulaghat UP office for geting sapling to plant again in my damaged lands, but my name was nor enlisted due to unknown reason."

The Kulaghat UP chairman Mohammad Shahjahan told this correspondent only 100 flood hits farmers of his union get sapling given by AED, whereas over one thousand flood hits farmers in his union lost their aman paddy by the recent flood. Litle distribution of sampling will not bring fruitful result in cultivating aman paddy in damaged lands, he added.

Sources of Lalmonirhat AED told nearable 30 thousand farmers become flood hits in the district and most of the aman paddy lands of them have been damaged by flood.

School, madrashas damaged by flood hampers education in Lalmonirhat

At least 110 educational institutions including high school, madrasa and primary schools have been partially or fully damaged by flood in five upazilas in Lalmonirhat district Of them, 22 were damaged fully and the rest partially, relevant sources said. District relief office including primary and secondary education office sources said most of the educational institutions are situated on the bank of the Teesta and Dharla or in shoal areas. River erosion and flood have caused an extensive damage to the institutions hampering educational activities to a great extent About 10 percent school, college and madrasas are now still under threat of river erosion and the authorities concerned are facing shortage of fund, said an education officer seeking anonymity. Most of the rooms and furniture of the institutions were damaged. In many cases, necessary documents were also washed away by floodwaters.

During a visit to the flood affected areas, this correspondent saw that many schools and madrasas have no trace of foundation at all.

Abinash Chandra, headmaster of Rajpur Junior High School in Sadar upazila said the school was established on one bigha of land with six tin shed rooms six years ago. Floodwaters have completely washed away the sheds. At present, the schools are running shortage of fund.

Shamsur Rahaman, headmaster of Gobordhan High School said the school was completely damaged by flood bringing educational activities to a standstill one and a half months ago. The school authorities are now looking for a safer place to rebuild the school. But, they need lots of money for the purpose. Earlier, the Teesta devoured the school four times and each time it was shifted to distant places.

Rahat Ali, headmaster of Sindurna registered primary school told that his school has already been damaged by Teesta river erosion in a week ago. Now there is no symbol of school at the venue. Over two hundred students are facing difficulty of their study.

Mawlana Habibur Rahaman, superintendent of Daliya Madrasha said, most of the part f his madrasha went into the womb of the Teesta river in a month resulting hampering education of 4 hundred students.

Harun, student of class eight, Monowara, student of class seven, Mim, student of class eight, Rahena, student of class six told this correspondent that they have been facing difficulty in their study as their school Char Bowal Mari high school has been devoured by the erosion of Dharla river in the last week. "Where we go, and where we get chance to study. Our parents are not rich men so we have nor able to go town for study. If our school not setup again our education would be finished from this stage."

Mohammad Azad, Lalmonirhat District Education Officer DEO said, it will not be possible to resume academic activities in the damaged institutions until and unless the government comes forward with adequate fund to rebuild those.

Minor girl kidnapped in Barisal, rescued in Kolkata

A minor girl, kidnapped in January this year from Ujirpur upazila in the district has been rescued in Kolkata recently.

Indian Red Cross Society in a leter informed the deputy director of Barisal Red Crescent Society about the incident last month. It said the girl was taken to the safe custody at Care Home at Berhampur in Murshidabad in West Bengal.

The girl, identified as Anjana Roy, 7, daughter of Shukhrnajan Roy was kidnapped when she came out of her school at Paisharhat under Ujirpur during tiffin break in January this year. Since the incident parents of Anjana did not have any idea about their daughter.

According to the leter of the Indian Red Crescent Society, West Bengal police arrested the kidnapper and rescued Anjana. It was also advised that father of the girl should contact appropriate authorities in Bangladesh through whom the girl could be sent back.

Meanwhile, Social Welfare Department will disburse about Taka 11.10 crore among 42,165 distressed people of ten upazilas in the district during the curresnt fiscal year.

Official sources said, of the total beneficiaries 36,195 people will get elderly allowances while 3,870 persons as disabled freedom fighters allowances and 2,100 person as handicapped allowances.

Elderly people will get Taka 220 as allowances each every month while disabled freedom fighters will receive Taka 500 each and handicapped person will get Taka 200 each every month.

The recipients include 4,144 in Barisal sadar, 5,316 in Bakerganj, 2,540 in Babuganj, 2,721 in Banaripara, 3,805 in Ujirpur, 3,093 in Gournadi, 2,394 in Agailjhara, 4,713 in Mehendiganj, 2,846 in Muladi, 2,558 in Hizla and 8,189 in City Corporation areas, the source added.

Two minor boys crushed under wheels of truck in Narayangonj

A truck killed two boys on the Kanchpur bridge on Dhaka-Chitagong Highway under Sonargaon police station this morning.

The accident occurred when the ill-fated children were trying to cross the road at the slope of the eastern side of the bridge. The killer Dhaka-bound truck fled away. Police and eyewitness sources said, the children aged between 7 and 8 could not be identified. The bodies were sent to hospital for autopsy.

Kishoreganj JCD president held

Members of the law-enforcing agencies picked up Syful Islam Sumon (30), President of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Kishoreganj district commitee and former VP of Gurudhuyal Govt College from his residence at Hybatnagor on Sunday evening on charge of land-grabbing and extortion.

Police said, Sumon was wanted by police for a long time for his anti-social activities.

Sumon was son of ex. BNP MP Kabir Ahmed.

Current nets worth about Tk 67,000 seized in Baraigram

Senior Upazila Fishery Officer Md Rezaul Islam with police force raided and seized illegal nets of fishing catching worth about Taka 67,000 from different beels of Baraigram upazila on September 16.

These illegal nets were burnt in Upazila Parishad campus in presence of acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Enamul Haque and other departmental officers on the day-Nets were 2 Badai-nets worth about Tk 60 thousand, one Khara-net worth about Tk 2 thousand and 20 current-nets worth about 5 thousand.

Concerned authorities also raided and seized illegal fishing badai-nets worth about Tk. 40 thousand from the Kaikhula beel on September 13. These nets also were burnt at the village Champta in presence of local public on that day.

UNB, Jamalpur Sept 19: A court here Tuesday awarded a man and his mother death sentence for killing his wife for dowry three years ago. The court also fined the convicts Mehdi Hasan Khan Masum and his mother Farida Begum of Golapbagh area of the district town Tk 1 lakh each. According to the prosecution, Masum and his family members locked in an altercation with his wife Sanjida Nur-e-Jannat Kakon on July 20, 2004 as she refused to bring Tk two lakh from his father as dowry. At one stage Masum and his mother beat her mercilessly and strangulated her to death. Later, they took the body to Sadar hospital and fled away, reports UNB.



Man beaten to death in Bagerhat

UNB, Bagerhat Sept 19: A young man was beaten to death allegedly by his rivals at a shrimp enclosure in Rampal upazila early Tuesday. The dead was identified as Salim Fakir, 32, son of Noor Ali. Locals said there had a longstanding dispute between Salim's family members and their neighbor Keramat Ali over the ownership of a plot of land. Salim's family members alleged Keramat and his musclemen kidnapped Salim when he went out of his house after taking Seheri. Later, they took him to the nearby shrimp enclosure and beat him to death. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed, reports UNB



Woman killed in road accident

UNB, Nilphamari Sept 19: A woman, who went to Sonarai Bazar in Domar upazila to talk to her daughter in capital by cell phone, was crushed under the wheels of a truck on Tuesday. Majida Khatun, wife of Ayub Ali of Khanabari village in the upazila, died on the spot as a truck hit her while she was crossing the road in the morning to go to a mobile phone shop. Vehicular movement on the road remained stopped for one hour following the accident A case was filed, reports UNB.



Engineer drowned in Kushiara river

UNB, Sylhet Stept 19: Engineer of Public Health Engineering Department in Jakiganj upazila Jotindra Kumar Biswas drowned in boat capsize in Kushiara River while carrying relief goods for flood victims Tuesday. Local people said Biswas along with some volunteers was going to distribute relief goods by a boat and at one stage caught by a storm it sank at Hatidhar area in the afternoon. The volunteers managed to swim ashore but Biswas remained missing. Police after hectic search recovered the body on Wednesday morning, reports UNB



Six sacks of OMS rice seized

UNB, Barisal, Sept 19: Police seized six sacks of OMS rice and arrested two people in Muladi upazila Monday morning. Mehdi Hasan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Mahbubur Rahman , Officer-in-Charge of Muladi thana, said Mainuddin, dealer for Kutubpur area of the upazila sold six sacks of OMS rice secretly to local rice trader Azaharuddin. The rice was carried to Muladi bandar by a trawler and when it was unloading upazila administration with the help of police raided the trawler and arrested Azahar along with the trawler owner Altaf Hossain, reports UNB.



Slaughterhouses opened

UNB, Barisal, Sept 19: Barisal City Corporation (BCC) Monday opened six slaughterhouses to ensure supply of standard meat among the consumers. Jahangir Hossain Molla, health and sanitary inspector of BCC, said the temporary slaughterhouses were opened at Puran Bazaar, Bangla Bazaar, Chowmatha Bazaar, Sagordi Bazaar, Natun Bazaar and Kashipur Bazaar of the city in hygienic condition.
