RAJBARI, Sept 13: A views exchanged meeting on legal aid for helpless poor people was held at the District Judges conference room on Monday. Organised jointly by BRAC and Ain-o-Shalish Kendra the meeting was atended by District and Sessions Judge Chowdhury Munir Uddin Mahfuz as the chief guest With president of Rajbari Bar Association Advocate Chita Ranjon Guha in the chair, the programme was addressed, among others, by additional district Judge Shahidullah Bakaul, Joint, district Judges Sayed Kamer Hossain and Rafizul Islam, assistant judges Waheedul Islam and Ali Masud Sheikh. Besides, area Manager of BRAC Bakiul Islam, Advocates Deleep Pal, Monwar Hossain, M Morshed, Debahooti Chakraborti, Gonesh Narayan Chowdhury, Shafiqul Azam Mamun, Liakat Ali, Mahbubor Rahaman, Zafar Iqbal and Zaynul Abedin were also present in the meeting, reports BSS.



Foundation of Chandpur Shilpakala Academy auditorium laid

CHANDPUR, Sept 13: The foundation of the auditorium of the local Shilpakala Academy has been laid on the academy premises at IM Sen Road here on Friday. Deputy Commissioner of Chandpur SM Monirul Islam laid the foundation stone in presence of local artistes and elite. The construction of the auditorium will be carried out by the ministry of culture at a cost of Taka 1.01 lakh. The construction is expected to be completed by December 2008, reports BSS.



Woman killed as tree falls on her in Rangamati

RANGAMATI, Sep 13: A woman was killed as a tree fell on her at Nowadam village of Sapchhari union under Sadar upazila while she was working at a hilly cropland with some other women on Monday morning. Police identified the victim as Siba Sugi Chakma, 45, wife of Hari Krishta Chakma. Police said the woman along with two others were working at a cropland on Monday morning. Suddenly a big uprooted tree fell on her and she died on the spot, reports BSS.



Daulatdia-Paturia ferry services disrupted

RAJBARI, Sept 13: Several hundred vehicles including passenger buses were stranded at Daulatdia and Paturia ferry terminal areas today as the services in Daulatdia and Paturia ferry ghats were disrupted due to rise of water level in the Padma. Hundreds of vehicles were seen on road to Paturia and Daulatdia ghats. Over six hundred vehicles were stranded in both sides of the river at around noon. The dislocation started last night, as one out of three ferry terminals at Daulatdia ghat became inoperative due to rise of water. Ferry cannot approach to one ghat at Daulatdia, Inland Water Transport Corporation (IWTC) sources told this Correspondent today. Of 12 ferries, six have remained out of order causing serious inconveniences of transportation, reports BSS.



Two drown as boat capsised in Habiganj

HABIGANJ, Sept 13: Two children drowned when a boat capsized in the river Bheramohona at Ajmiriganj in the district on Saturday. The dead were identified as Soyeb Miah, 7, son of Kamal Miah of Munsihati village and Sourav Miah, 8, son of Saful Miah of the same village. Sources said the accident took place when an Ajmiriganj-bound motorised boat from Itna of Kishoreganj carrying a bridal party caught in a storm and capsized the boat Two children drowned in the accident while other passengers of the boat managed to swam ashore, reports BSS.
