The recent flood has caused loss of Tk 50 lakh in fisheries sector in nine unions in Sarail upazila.

Local Fisheries Department said fishes of 520 water bodies worth about Tk 30 lakh were washed away in the upazila.

They also estimated the loss due to damage of infrastructure of ponds and other water bodies at Tk 20 lakh. The affected pisciculturists, who cultivated fish taking bank loan and borrowing money from money lenders with high rate of interest, now are in great agony as they have to repay the money soon. In this situation, the fish farmers urged the government to take steps to rehabilitate them on emergency basis.
