Janmastami
According to the "Bhagavad Gita" when evil power envelops this world and it becomes necessary to protect virtue and innocence from the violence and cruelties of that power Lord Krishna comes to this world to establish religion in its true glory by purging the evil. Lord Krishna's descent to earth on the eighth waning night of the Bengali month 'Bhadra' during Rohini Nakshatra (asterism) is celebrated as Janmastami by the Hindu community all over the world.
The devotees begin the festival by fasting on the previous day. After morning prayers and worship, the devout break their fasts with ' Prasadam', food that has first been offered to God. In Dhaka the day is extensively celebrated at the Dhakeshwari Temple through several religious events. Other temples around the city also organize religious events like Kirtan, Geeta Jagna and special prayers to mark the day.
