54 alleged criminals held

Police, in separate anticrime drives, arrested 29 alleged criminals, including six drug- peddlers, from different areas in the city and nine thanas of the district in last 24 hours ending on Friday.

Of them, 15 persons, including the six drug-traders, were rounded up from different areas in the metropolis and 14 others from nine upazilas of the district

The six drug-traders, including a woman, identified as Chandu, 40, Asdar, 42, Osman, 32, Abdul, 37, Rabiul, 29, and Fahima, 40, were captured with 250 grams of heroin and 20 botles of phensidyl from Greater Road and Boshpara areas under Boalia Thana in the city. During the same time, traffic police lodged 16 cases under motor vehicles ordinance and seized a motorbike without registration and valid documents during raids against the faulty motor vehicles.

BSS from Rangpur says: Police arrested a total of 15 persons from different areas of the district during the past 24 hours till 12 noon on Thursday, police sources said.

The arrested persons included absconding warrantees, drug peddlers, cow-lifters, terrorists, thieves, accused persons in women and children repression cases, criminals and anti-social elements, the sources said.

Of them, Kotwali police arrested five persons, Gangachara two, Badarganj one, Pirganj three, Kawnia two and DB police arrested two suspected criminals during the drives.

Police also recovered good quantities of phensidyl, ganja, wine, stolen goods and lethal weapons during the raids.

The arrested persons were later sent to jail hajat when police produced them before different Rangpur courts today, the sources said.

Another report from Rangamati says: Police arrested five youths on suspicion from different parts of the district town on Tuesday night

The arrested were identified as Rupam Barua, 18, son of Sadhan Barua, Swandip Mallik, 20, son of Binod Mallik, Jhuntu Chowdhuyry, 20, son of Shatya Chowdhury, Mohammad Ismail, 20, son of Ali Akbar and Ibrahim Khalil, 40 son of Azizul Islam.

They were arrested from police line, Reserve Bazar and Hospital areas of the town as there movement was suspicious, police said.

UNB from Rangamati reports: The joint forces in separate raids arrested two Jubo Dal and LDP leaders in the district town on Wednesday night They were identified as LDP (B Chowdhury) district convenor and secretary of Chitagong Hill Tracts Sports Association Nirmal Barua Milon and Khagrachhari district Jubo Dal president Abdus Salam. Sources said Salam was arrested from his sister's house in the town and Milon was held from Sadar Hospital road area on various charges.

BSS from Lalmonirhat adds: Detective Branch (DB) of Lalmonirhat Police arrested listed top terrorist of the district Atikur Rahman Prince, 30 from Lalmonirhat Pourashava area on Wednesday night, police sources said.

The sources said acting on secret information, a special police squad led Officer-in-Charge of Lalmonirhat DB police Moynul Islam conducted a sudden raid and arrested Prince, son of Moslem Uddin of Ram Krishna Mission Mour area in Lalmonirhat town.

DB police also seized two botles contraband phensidyl from his possession during the raid.

A total of nine criminal cases in connection with possessing illegal arms, thefts, terrorist atacks, clashes, women and children repression and drug are pending against the arrested top terrorist with different police stations in Lalmonirhat

Later, DB police handed over Prince to Lalmonirhat Sadar Thana Police in the same night, the sources said.

Kurigram-Chilmari rail line needs urgent repair

The trains are running at a very high risk in Kurigram-Chilmari line as there are so many problems at the rail route in Kurigram.

There are no stones on the railway track and as the slippers are not sufficient and very old, at any time there might happen serious accident at the rail route.

Due to the problem derailment of trains occurred frequently many times in this line and the running of goods and passengers in the train was stopped many times. As a result, government is being deprived of large amount of revenue earnings.

Though the passenger's trains are running at risk for insufficient compartments where the passengers have been traveling in a great risk for a long days.

In this route the rail line has been normally repaired but actually the main construction should have not been applied for well condition.

A source of railway said, no significant repair work was done in this track for many years. the source further said the train fair is still much less than the bus fare. Due to bus fare the passenger trains are mostly needed here.

Local sources said about one and a half decades this traik-route of this area is in dangerous and there are no steps to repair necessary. Decision to repair have been awaited for a long time. The people alleged that this route is known as this train Garour garee " (cows cart) for its bad affect in the train. All people want to repair urgently this bad condition of at the rail route of Kurigram-Chilmari.

Two minors drown

Two minor children drowned in different waterbodies in Kurigram on 29 August and 30 August

The deceased were identified as Tareq, (5), son of Abdul Khaleq of the village Chengerpar Pandit para of Union Kanthalbari under Sadar Upazila of the district

Family sources said Tareq while went to catch fish from his house with his uncle in a time at the pond the went to the deep water and none could find his dead body. After a while his dead body was found on water.

Another girl was identified as Sharmin, (6), daughter of Rahmat Mia of the village Polashbari under Sadar Upazila of the district

Local sources said the girl drowned at 11 AM while she was playing near the water-body adjacent to her house. After three hours her dead body, was found on water which was recoveredly her family members.

WDB teams visit erosion-hit areas in Kurigram

Two high-powered supervising teams comprising senior officials of the Ministry of Water Resources and Water Development Board (WDB) visited different erosion-hit areas at Ulipur and Chilmari Upazilas of Kurigram and Sariakandi Upazila in Bogra on Tuesday, official sources said.

A team led by joint secretary of the ministry Mahbub Ul Alam visited various riverside spots affected by erosion of the Brahmaputra in Hatia union under Ulipur upazila, Puthimari Kajoldanga under Chilmari upazila to observe the situation and know the reasons behind river erosion in the areas. Later, the team atended a views-exchange meeting with civil society members, elite, teachers and public representatives at Bagua Anantapur High School ground at Hatia to share views on the reasons of floods, erosion and ways for preventing such natural calamities.

Local people asked the team members for taking steps to increase navigability of the Brahmaputra and construct embankments for saving the areas from floods that cause colossal damages to crops, properties and land every year.

The team included senior official of the ministry, director general of IMED of the ministry Rukhsana Begum, Director General of the Water Development Board ATM Badruddoza, Additional Chief Engineer of LGED Nurul Islam, senior assistant secretary of the ministry of water resources Kaniz Fatema.

Another team led by secretary of WDB Syed Mohammad Zobaer and IMED Secretary Motahar Hossain, DG of WDB Mozadded Faruque and chief engineer of WDB's Rajshahi zone Habibur Rahman visited erosion-hit areas in Kalitola and adjoining areas in Sariakandi upazila of Bogra.

Distribution of Aman seedlings starts in Rajshahi

Distribution of seedlings of transplanted aman among the small and marginal farmers in the flood- affected areas of the district has began on Wednesday.

A function was organised on the occasion on the Charghat Upazila Complex premises where seedlings were distributed among 110 farmers. With this seedlings they will be able to bring about 110 acres of land under aman cultivation.

Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rabindra Kumar Majumder, representative of Bangladesh Army Major Didar-e-Zabid, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sitara Begum and other officials concerned were present on the occasion.

Under the post-flood agriculture rehabilitation programme, around 500 affected farmers will provided with aman seedlings for bringing about 300 acres of land under cultivation in six upazilas of the district

The DAE has also encouraged the farmers for growing aman seedlings on about 1,000 acres of land which will enable them to bring 20,000 land under transplanted aman cultivation.

Besides, another 11,700 farmers would be provided with necessary seeds, fertiliser and other agricultural inputs for cultivating boro, wheat, hybrid maize, pulses, mustard and vegetables on 3,900 acres of land.

The district and upazila level government officials and army officials have been monitoring the field level agriculture rehabilitation programme for its successful implementation.

Deputy Director of DAE Rabindra Kumar Majumder told BSS that the farmers are being given need-based ideas for growing seedlings by using modern methods so that they could minimize their loss caused by flood.

To make the vegetable cultivation in the forthcoming winter season a success, a massive programme has already been taken, Majumder said adding seeds and other necessary inputs along with technical know-how would be extended to the farmers.

Besides, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) has been implementing a special agriculture credit programme to rehabilitate the flood-affected farmers with a view to increase credit flow towards agriculture sector along with revitalizing the rural economy.

Police said the marriage of Manjira Khatun,14, daughter of Mozammel Haque of Bhagbanpur village was fixed with a youth Rubel, 22, son of Parchu Sheikh of the same village was arranged and preparations were ready to complete the occasion on Monday night

Being informed, a team of police from Palashbari police station rushed there. Sensing police presence the bridegroom along with the bridal party escaped the scene.

sub-stipend project held in Pirganj

RANGPUR, Sept 9: A day-long training course on implementation of the ongoing sub-stipend project successfully at primary education level and building social awareness was held at the auditorium of Pirganj Upazila Parishad here on Wednesday. Swimming competition held in Chandpur

CHANDPUR, Sept 9: The 10th District Swimming Competition organised by Chandpur District Sports Association was held at the newly built Chandpur swimming pool on Saturday last About 200 swimmers from different upazilas of the district took part in 14 events. Four national swimmers and seven swimmers from the army also participated in the competition. Chandpur Swimming Club became the champion in the competition while the Malek Swimming Club turned up as runner-up. Deputy Commissioner of Chandpur SM Monirul Islam distributed prizes among the winners, reports BSS.



20 botles phensidyl seized in Madaripur

MADARIPUR, Sept 9: Police in a drive seized 20 botles of phensidyl from a passenger bus on Bhanga-Kaorakandi road under Shibchar upazila at around 9 PM on Wednesday. Police sources said acting on an information, police intercepted a passenger bus at the eastern side of the Haji Shariatullah Bridge and seized the phensidyl. None was arrested in this connection as the botles of phensidyl were found in an abandoned condition. A case was filed with Shibchar Police Station in this connection, reports BSS.



Workshop on 'Women Children' held in Narail

NARAIL, Sept 9: workshop on 'Role of Education and Mass Communication and Administration for the Development of Children and Women' under the communication strategy for children and women development project (3rd phase) was held here on Wednesday.
