16 killed, 44 injured in separate incidents

Bodies of three people, went missing since on Sunday evening after they jumped in Shibsha river from a launch, were recovered on Monday night

Two of the dead were identified as Rafiq Gazi, 22, of Bagali village of Koira Upazila and Nuru Sarder,50, of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira district

Police recovered the bodies after a hectic search till 11 PM on Monday. Local sources said the three among some panicked passengers of the Khulna-bound "Jorshi-7" jumped in the river as the vessel leaned due to strong current on Sunday evening and could not swim ashore. However, the launch did not sink.

Police is still searching for more bodies.

UNB from Comilla says: Three people, including directors of two banks, were killed and three others injured in a head on collision between a jeep and a covered-van at Nankara in Chouddagram Upazila on Tuesday morning.

Local source said the Chitagong-bound covered-van collided with the relief-goods laden jeep of Anjuman-e-Mofidul Islam at about 10AM, killing three on the spot

The deceased were identified as Rotarians Shahidul Islam Kaderi, Director of Bangladesh Krishi Bank, and Salam Harun, Director of Standard Bank, and jeep driver Zahir.

Injured Engineer Manwar Ahmed, former General Secretary of Chitagong Rotary Club, Assistant Director of Anjuman-e-Mofidul Islam Selim Naser Sarker, and its electrician Asgar Khan were admited to Comilla Medical College Hospital.

The tragedy struck down the joint team of Chitagong Rotary Club and Anjuman-e-Mofidul Islam of Chitagong when they were going to Haimchar Upazila in Chandpur district to distribute relief goods among the flood victims.

UNB from Faridpur says: Two people were killed and 15 others injured in separate road accidents in Bhanga Upazila on Faridpur-Barisal Highway on Monday.

Bhanga Municipality and Kaoidubi area in the upazila In the first accident in Bhanga Municipal area, a septuagenarian woman was killed and 15 others injured when a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in the afternoon.

Local sources said a Barguna-bound bus from Dhaka fell into the ditch at about 1 PM while trying to give side to a motorcycle, killing Maya Laxmi Majumder, 70, and injuring 15 others. Of the injured, Prabir Majumder, 47, Amita Majumder, 40, and Anita Majumder, 10, of Patharghata upazila in Barguna district were admited to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition. They all are the relatives of deceased Maya Laxmi Majumder.

In another accident, a minor boy was crushed under the wheels of a bus at Koidubi area in the evening.

Witnesses said the speeding bus ran over the unidentified boy, aged around 10, at about 6 PM when he was crossing the road. Separate cases were filed with Bhanga thana.

UNB from Barisal adds: A girl was crushed under wheels of a bus at Natunhut in Babuganj Upazila on Barisal-Dhaka highway Monday morning. Witnesses said a Dhaka bound bus ran over Ria Moni, 11, while she was crossing the road on her way to maternal grand mother's house, killing her on the spot

The bus driver managed to flee away.

The body of the victim was handed over to her family after autopsy at Barisal SBMCH on Monday afternoon.

BSS from Rangpur adds: A motorcyclist was killed in an accident at Dharmodash point in front of the Regional Research Centre of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway under Kotwali thana here recently. They said a Rangpur-bound coach of Agomoni Paribahan from Dhaka hit a motorcycle from behind at 2:10 pm at the point, injuring seriously its rider Idris Ali, 55, son of Abdul Gaffar of village Azizollah under Kotwali thana.

Kotwali police rushed to the spot and sent the injured person to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died at 3:45 pm.

A case was filed with Kotwali police in this connection, the sources said.

BSS from Chuadanga says: Jibonnagar police as part of its social responsibility intervened in a wedding function at Baiddyanathpur village under the Jibonnagar Upazila and stopped an incident of child marriage which was scheduled to be held on Friday last

Police said the marriage of Esnahar Begum, 13, daughter of Enamul Haque of Baiddyanathpur and a student of class seven of Hashada Girls High School was fixed with another minor boy Nurruzzaman, 15, son of Nuhu Biswas of Kushadanga village under the same upazila was arranged and all preparations were ready to complete the occasion.

Being informed, officer-in-charge of Hashada camp, a team of police rushed to the spot stopped the marriage of the two minors.

UNB from Comilla says: A man was killed and four people were injured when a truck rammed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Ratanpur in Dakkhin Sadar Upazila on Wednesday morning. Police said the truck hit the three-wheeler at about 11 AM killing auto-rickshaw passenger Rajesh Chandra Pal, 35, and injuring four others.

The injured were admited to Comilla Medical College Hospital.

UNB from Bhairab (Kishoreganj) reports: A tea stall owner was stabbed to death allegedly by a fruit trader in Bhairab Bus Stand area on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Yasin Mia, 38, of Jagannathpur area of Bhairab municiplality.

Police and witnesses said fruit trader Kala Mia of the area locked in an altercation with Yasin in the morning over a previous enmity. At one stage Kala Mia entered the tea stall of Yasin with a knife and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured. The victim succumbed to his injuries on way to Dhaka for treatment On information, police rushed to the spot and arrested Kala Mia along with the knife.

A case was filed.

UNB from Sirajganj reports: At least 15 people were injured, six seriously, in a clash over land dispute at Moradaha village in Ullapara Upazila on Tuesday.

Police said there had a longstanding dispute between Belal Mandal and Azizul of the village over the demarcation of boundary lines of their respective dwelling houses.

Local people said both Belal and Azizul locked in an altercation over the issue and at one stage supporters of Azizul atacked on the house of Belal at about 5pm, leaving 15 people injured. The atackers allegedly damaged a dwelling house of Belal and looted Tk 30,000 in cash. The six seriously injured were admited to Sadar Hospital.

A case was filed with the police in this connection.

UNB from Thakurgaon says : A schoolgirl was killed in a tragic road accident in front of Balaka Cinema Hall in the district town on Tuesday morning.

The dead was identified as Pingki, 13, only daughter of Abdul Jabbar, also a student of class VI of Thakurgaon Government Girls High School. Witnesses said the accident occurred at about 10 AM when a speeding truck rammed the rickshaw carrying Pinkgi and her two schoolmates, killing her on the spot However, the two other girls and the rickshaw-puller miraculously escaped unhurt After the accident the truck fled way the scene hurriedly. Another report from Madaripur adds: A minor boy was crushed under the wheels of a bus on Amgram bridge in Rajoir Upazila on Tuesday at about 11 AM.

The dead was identified as Ujjal, 8, son of Fajal Bepari of Farankandi area of Amgram village in the Upazila.

BSS from Rajbari adds: Two persons were killed and seven others injured in an accident at Bashantapur village in Sadar Upazila on Dhaka-Khulna highway today.

The accident took place when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus 'Druti Paribahan' coming from Barisal hit a parked truck from behind this morning.

Police said bus driver Jahangir Hossain, 40, and his helper Mizan, 25, died on the spot

They said injured seven passengers of the bus were sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police recovered the bodies and sent them to Sadar Hospital for autopsy. A case was filed.
