A court here on Thursday convicted a man and awarded him death penalty for killing his uncle in 1997. The convict is Iftekhar Ali Haider Khokon, of Panchalaish thana of the city.

According to the prosecution, Iftekhar had wanted to marry his cousin Mahbuba Mostafa but his uncle M Mostafa, 57, former director of Education and Statistics Bureau, arranged his daughter Mahbuba's marriage At this Iftekhar became furious and slaughtered his uncle after entering into his bedroom on April 25, 1997. A case was filed in this connection and police submited charge sheet against four people, including Iftekhar.

After examining the witnesses and records Additional Sessions Judge M Shamsul Huda pronounced the verdict acquiting three others.
