Monohardi UP achieves 100 pc birth registration

Eleven unions and one municipality areas under Monohardi Upazila in the district have achieved hundred percent success in birth registration by August 12 last while the target of achieving countrywide total birth registration by 2008.

Official sources said a total of 2,65,762 male and female including children of 11 unions and one municipality areas under Monohardi Upazila were registered with their date of births under the supervision of Upazila administration.

Deputy Commissioner of the district Zillur Rahamn informed a meeting held at Monohardi Upazila Parishad auditorium on Sunday.

Presided over by Shahidul Islam, Upazila Nibrahi Officer of Monohardi, the meeting was addressed, by officials of district and upazila administrations. The Deputy Commissioner expressed his satisfaction that Monohardi is the first upazila in the country that achieved total birth registration much ahead of the national target

He thanked government officials, elected representatives, teachers and others for making people aware about the necessity of birth registration.

He hoped that the rest of the upazilas of the district will achieve 100 percent birth registration within December 2007.

Flood victims need food, shelter in Manirampur

Over flooded water of the river Kapatakhia has inundated the vast areas of Jhampa and Mashim Nagar Unions. The people of the area have been suffering much. Due to scarcity of food and shelter they are passing hard days.

According to the report, Seven villages of Moshin Nagar Union were flooded. The villages are: Chakla, Kasmat Chokla. Nowali, Bharatpur Laksmipur and Perkhujura. Four thousand people under 5 hundred family were affected. On the otherhand, Jhampa village of Jhampa Union is also flooded. Two hundred twenty-five kancha and semi pacca houses were damages of the villages. Besides about 5 hundred hectars of Aman paddy, a good number of vegetable and coton land were also damaged. Fishes of 17 embankment and 60 ponds with 3 bawer were drift away.

According to the reliable source relif operation among the ilfated people is not satisfactory.

Recently Deputy Commissioner distributed relief materials among the flood-hit people. But the volume of the materials was very poor, sources added. On the other hand on August 16 headed by Captain Israfil Alam 5 kg of rice were distributed among 3 hundred family. On the day Dr Sk Keramot Ali distributed medicine among the patient of the villages. Union Chairman Adv Gofur, PIO Md Anwarul Islam and Dr Jahingir Hossain were present at that time.

Flood affected people passing hard days in Lalmonirhat

Sokhina Bewa does not where she will get shelter to live, now she is seen seating alone beside the embankment of the mighty river Teesta at Gobordhan area under Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat She looks the water of Teesta and thinking the recent flood and erosion by Teesta have devoured her family. Sokhina Bewa,60, widow of late Mahmud Ali at Gobordhan village has been living with her two unmarried daughters and two sons and their wives with four sons. Her husband was died ten years ago. Sokhina and her family had been living through cultivating 6 acres of land at the village. But in the last week they were reeled by flood water and after improved flood situation they had to face Teesta river erosion. Her total cultivable lands and homestead have already gone into the womb of Teesta river in the last three days, resulting Sokhina and her family totally become shelter less, now living on Teesta flood control dump at Mohiskhocha area.

Maleka Bewa, another flood affected victim by Teesta river water at the village Rajpur under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila, looking yesterday Wednesday morning collecting leaf of Kochu at beside the Airport road in the town, told her sorrowful story to this correspondent

Maleka Bewa,62, widow of late Khabir Uddin had two bighas of land. She had a straw made house but her homestead with her only a straw made house has already been devoured by the Teesta river erosion in the last week, made her homeless, landless. Maleka has taken shelter at her relative house at Kalmati village under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila. For her living bread, Maleka collecting leaf of Kochu wher and there and then she sold it in the town market earning only 15 to 20 taka per day that is not sufficient for her.

Her husband was died twelve years and she had been living on cultivation her two bighas land, she told. Maleka also told that she has not son but have two daughters who were married, also they are flood affected victims at Khuniya Gachh village under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila.

Maleka alleged that she did not get any relief goods from the government even from any social organizations or NGO.

Flood affected victims in the district waiting for help of government They are looking very kindles due to they lost their assets, lands, by flood water and erosion.

According to the Lalmonirhat district administration record, in the recent flood 1 lakh 26 thousand 5 hundred and 56 people of 26 thousand 862 families at 17 unions in 42 unions of 5 upazilas in Lalmonirhat district become flood affected victim. Standing crops of 3982 acres land at theses flood affected areas damaged and 226 kilometers Katcha road have been damaged, two children were drowned in the flood water, 25 kilometers flood dump were damaged and 34 establishments both government and non government and the total 8220 houses were damaged.

But the unofficial sources recorded that in the recent flood about 2 lakh people of 50 thousand families at 17 unions in 42 unions of 5 upazilas in Lalmonirhat district become flood affected victim. Standing crops of 5 thousand acres of land at theses flood affected areas damaged and the total 15 thousand houses were damaged and four persons were drowned in the fold water.

The government has allocated only Tk 9 lakh 50 thousand and 295 metric tons rice as relief good to flood affected people in Lalmonirhat district, that is very minor as per required of flood affected people.

The exact figure of damaging by recent flood yet to be known from the government concerned official. Perhaps, Tk 50 crores amount damaged by the recent flood. Of them Tk 12 crores in fisheries sector, Tk 20 crores in agriculture sector and rest other 18 crore of public propriety, told an unofficial source at DC office.

7 killed in separate incidents in dists

At least four people were killed when a passenger crammed bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Shimultali in Tarail upazila under Kishoreganj district on Sunday.

Locals and Police said, the Dhaka bound bus Isha Kha express from Tarail tumbled down the ditch at about 3 PM as the driver lost his control over steering. The dead were identified as Panu Shaka (73), Raton (4) Sharmin (5) and Sualtha (17). All are the residents of Sheemol Hari. The seriously injured passengers were admited to Kishoreganj Modem Hospital and Tarail thana health complex.

Our Correspondent, from Chuadanga says : A young man was killed in a tragic road accident at Kisnopur village on Chuadanga-Alamdanga road under Alamdanga Upazila in Chuadanga district recently.

The dead was identified, Sowkat Ali (25) son of Sairaddin of village Bhogailbagade under same upazila. Witnesses said the accident occurred when an Alamdanga bound bus (Jhenaidah JA110019) from Chuadanga town plunged into a roadside ditch on the spot driver lost control over the staring at 8 AM killing the Sowkatoli on the spot

BSS from Lakkhipur says: A school student was killed at Sonapur village under Sadar Upazila in the district on Saturday night as he gave witness to an incident of stealing a pigeon.

The victim was identified as Shipon, 12, son of Kala Miah of Sonapur and a student of class six of a local school.

Police and locals said Shipon gave witness to an incident of stealing a pigeon against one Mozammel of the same village on Thursday last

Mozammel called Shipon out of his house pretending to take him to local bazaar on Saturday night But instead he took Shipon to a nearby garden and stabbed him to death.

Shipon's body was found in the garden on Sunday morning. Being informed police recovered the body and sent to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.

Father of Shipon filed a murder case with Lakkhipur sadar thana.

BSS from Brahmmanbaria says: An adolescent of village Buriar Char under Nashirnagar Upazila of the district drowned on Sunday.

The adolescent was identified as Dipanker Sarkar, 14, son of Probir Kumar Sarkar.

Police said Dipankar drowned in floodwater around their house on Sunday evening. Later his body was found floating nearby.

4 traders gets 5-yr RI in Rajbari

Two dacoits arrested from Dhaka, Sirajganj

Police is separate raids arrested two leaders of an inter-district dacoit gang from Jatrabari area of Dhaka and Ullapara upazila here on Wednesday.

The arrested were identified as Joynal, 28, of Ispahani village in Narayanganj Bandar thana and Kalu, 25, of Borokura village in Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj.

Police said acting on a secret information, they arrested Joynal from Jatrabari area and Kalu from the Guchchhagram of Ullapara upazila of the district

One killed, 3 injured as Nasimon-truck collides on Barisal-Dhaka highway

One passenger killed at the spot and other 3 including driver of Nasimon, locally assembled tempo, in collision with a loaded truck near Batajore on Barisal-Dhaka highway under Gournadi Upazila of Barisal district on Saturday morning.

The death victim was identified as Abul Hashem, 55, a wood log businessman of Matlab upazila under Chandpur district and the injured 3 were tempo driver Ismail, 26, Aleya Begum, 55, and Mobarak Sardar, 55, passengers. Witnesses and injured sources said a Nasimon plying on Shikarpur-Batajore route with ten passengers was hit by a loaded truck from opposite direction at about 10 am.

A mothers' gathering for raising awareness about the atendant of students in the Primary Schools was held to at Luxmipur Govt Primary School in Muktagacha Upazila of the district, recently.

Organised by the managing commitee and teachers ,of the school, the gathering was atended by district primary education officer Dabesh Chandra Sarker as the chief guest while Upazila Primary Education Officer Md. Abu Haris, Journalist Imamuddin Mukta, President of the managing commitee Wahedul Alom Khan as the special guest respectively.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (incharge) Abul Bashar Md. Amir Uddin presided over the gathering. Robbers loot bus passengers, injured 14 in Madaripur

Highwaymen looted cash and other valuables worth about Tk 5 lakh from the passengers of a bus at Bajitpur in Sadar upazila on Friday night, leaving 14 passengers injured. Witnesses said some robbers in the guise of passengers boarded the Jhalakati bound bus from Dhaka.

When the bus reached near Bajitpur on Faridpur-Barisal highway the bandits swooped on the passengers and looted their gold ornaments, cash and other belongings at gunpoint

The gang beat and stabbed 14 passengers when they tried to resist them. The injured were admited to the local hospital.

Polythene sheets seized from launch in Barisal

Environment Directorate officials here seized 320 kgs of polythene sheets worth Tk 50,000 from a launch Tuesday. Sources said the sheets were packed in two cartons marked as Khan & Sons Jutex Limited and a case was filed against Asaduzzaman, manager of the company and Sanjoy Duta, clerk of the launch. Local Environment Directorate sources said they seized more than 1000 kilograms of polythene sheets from different parts of Barisal division in 80 separate drives. They filed 89 cases, arrested one and realized Tk 6000 in fine during the period.

The operation will continue, said Kaiser Ahmed, deputy director- in-charge of the directorate.

Participants at a daylong workshop held at a local hotel here on Tuesday underscored the need for joint efforts of all stakeholders in society to resist all sorts of violence and repression on women in any form for a happy and peaceful society.

They also stressed the need for a social campaign, particularly among the vulnerable hardcore poor groups and for proper enforcement of all relevant laws as the efforts of the government or any other single organisation are not sufficient to stop such social crimes.

Bangladesh Rural Improvement Foundation (BRIF) under the technical assistances of the Souhardo programme of CARE-Bangladesh organised the workshop titled "We Demand Eradication of All Sorts of Violence and Repression on Women."

Project Coordinator of BRIF M Shamsul Alam presided over the workshop that was atended by chairman of Rangpur Pourasabha AKM Abdur Rouf Manik as the chief guest

Commissioners of Rangpur Pourasabha Arzina Begum, Farida Begum, Programme Manager of BRIF Tohura Akhter and Advocate Shameema Akhter Shirin, among others, addressed the workshop.

Saline production project launched

Rangpur district units of Bangladesh Scouts and Bangladesh Rovers on Tuesday launched a project at district Scouts Building for producing 100,000 packs of oral saline for the flood-hit distressed people in the flood-affected areas throughout the country.

Under the assistance of the Social Development and Health Department of Bangladesh Scouts, veteran scout Alhaj Mujibur Rahman in a simple ceremony formally inaugurated the saline project

Workshop on preventing road accidents held

A day-long workshop on 'Role of All Concerned in Preventing Road Accidents' organised by the Traffic Department of district police administration was held at Rangpur Police Community Centre auditorium here on Monday.

Forum meeting for female UP members held in Taraganj

A daylong forum meeting for the members of Taraganj Upazila Forum Commitee (UFC) of Female UP Members was held here on Monday.

RAJBARI, Aug 22: Two persons were sentenced to five- years rigorous imprisonment each and three others to four years by a court here for injuring a person by cuting veins of his legs ten years ago. Additional district magistrate of Rajbari Mohammad Nurul Alam pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom on Monday. The convicts were identified as Akkas Ali, leader of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party, his accomplices Abdul Quader Sheikh, Abdur Rahman Gadu, Abu Zafar and Rezaul Karim. Akkas and Quader, who were sentenced to five-years imprisonment also fined Taka 3,000 each in default to suffer fifteen more days in prison. The prosecution story in brief is that Akkas and his accomplices atacked Hashem Mondol, a social worker of Khanganj village under Sadar Upazila and cut veins of his legs. A case was filed against Akkas and his accomplices in this connection, reports BSS.

Navy recovers 19 firearms in Moheshkhali

COX'S BAZAR, Aug 24: Bangladesh Navy in different drives during the last three days recovered 19 firearms from Moheshkali . Police said acting on secrete tip, the Navy recovered three one-barrel guns, three pistols, three light guns, and one local made gun from separate drives in Sonarpara under Kalarmarchhara Union, Kathatali village under Chhoanak Union, Lambarghola village and Munshir Dail area under Moheshkali Upazila. Bangladesh Navy source said all the recovered firearms were found in abandoned conditioned, reports BSS.

Open market to ensure fair price in Naogaon

NAOGAON, Aug 24: The district administration has set up an open-market to sell vegetables and other essentials, including meat and fish, in the Naogaon town to check the price hike of the items during Ramadan. Deputy Commissioner M Shefaul Karim inaugurated the market at a simple ceremony on Saturday. Major Anwar Hossain and Poura Chairman M Shafiqul Islam, among others, spoke on the occasion. Officials of the district and upazila administrations and Agriculture Extension Department were present The market will remain open from 8 am to 11 am and 2 PM to 6 PM everyday, reports BSS.

Catle, poultry birds vaccinated in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Aug 22: Department of Livestock, under its post-flood rehabilitation programme has vaccinated 11,800 catle and 3,43,000 chicken and ducks in the affected areas of seven upazilas in the district during the last few days. Official sources said, vaccination programme is part of livestock department's measure to protect poultry birds from diseases like fowl pox, foul cholera and duck plague, and prevent catle diseases like anthrax, black quarter, PPR and goat pox. Talking to BSS, district livestock officer Dr M. Mokarram Hossain said with the receding of floodwaters, the vaccination programme is being carried out in flood affected areas of Gaibandha Sadar, Sundarganj, Fulchhari and Saghata Upazilas of the district, reports BSS.

Journalists-police exchange views in Dinajpur

DINAJPUR, Aug 24: The local journalists and police officials at a meeting yesterday decided to exchange information on a regular basis to maintain friendly working relations between them. Superintendent of Police (SP) Mustafa Kmal presided over the meeting held at Dinajpur Press Club.
