After a two-hour battle, the firefighters extinguished a devastating fire that broke out at a garment factory at the city's Malibagh Chowdhurypara Saturday afternoon. The fire damaged the five storied Envoy Garment Industry located at 400/B Chowdhurypara at about 5pm.
The Fire Services and Civil Defence men said that they could not ascertain the loss of life and property immediately. They also could not unearth the cause of origination of the fire. The fire service officials said that 11 of their units, two from Khilgaon station, two from Tejgaon station and seven from the headquarters, fought for extinguishing the fire.
Witnesses said that army men from a local camp rushed to the spot and controlled the mob that helped the firefighters' rescue operation.
Local people said the fire might have been originated from the boiler in the factory owned by BGMEA's Director Abdus Salam Murshedi. The flames damaged the factory on the 3rd and 4th floors of the building.
