Iranian container ship MV Mir Danad, which was sinking in the Bay with 17 crews Sunday after cracks developed on its lower deck, has come out of danger. "The ship is safe now," Harbour Master of Mongla Port Captain Shariful said adding that reasons behind the crack could not be immediately known.
The crews of MV Mir Danad started removing water from the ship by irrigation pumping machine. Some 40 percent water was removed from the ship till Monday noon.
The main engine and two generators of the ship were damaged by water.
Mongla Naval Ship BNS Karotoa reached the spot Sunday night to salvage the Iranian ship that sailed from Chittagong Port on Thursday for Chennai Port of India with 91 empty containers on board.
The crews on board the ship are from Bangladesh, India and Iran, the sources said.
After removing the water, the ship will be taken to the Chittagong Port for repair.
MV Mir Danad began taking in water Sunday morning 60 nautical miles southeast off Hiron Point of Mongla seaport as cracks developed on its lower deck. BNS Cargo Agency of Chittagong is the local agent of the ship.
