Prof SMA Faiz, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU), urged the government, non-government institutions and NGOs to enhance the amenities for safe maternity because every year thousands of mothers die for lack of proper treatment.
He urged this while addressing as chief guest a symposium on 'Safe Motherhood and Planned Family" at Sheraton Hotel yesterday.
Population Science Department of the university in collaboration with UNFPA arranged the programme.
Prof Harun-or-Rashid, Dean of Social Science Faculty of DU and Nurul Amin, assistant representative of UNFPA, addressed the symposium as special guests.
"We have to know at first why the maternity death rate is increasing day by day. We should identify the specific problem to reduce the rate," he said.
Project Director of the Department Prof AKM Nurunnabi moderated the symposium with Chairperson of the Department Tahmina Gafur in the chair.
Nurul Amin said that they were trying to reduce motherhood mortality rate of the country by conducting different projects.
