HAWAII PACIFIC TELEPORT (HPT) announced that it has entered into an agreement with Genusys Inc of Dallas to provide a satellite back up service in Dhaka city Bangladesh for fiber customers requiring continual access to the Internet when international fiber service is unavailable.

Subscribers to the new service will be corporate users including banks which need to maintain constant communications with other offices, plus call centers and Internet Service Providers who are currently using the fledgling international fiber service provided by BTTB which has yet to achieve a QOS to satisfy all customer needs on a 24x7 basis.

Many of the new fiber customers are continuing to maintain some satellite back up capability for which they are paying 24x7 whether or not they use the service, which makes for an expensive 'fiber restoration' service.

The Sure2Link Internet service will be available 24x7 on an hourly charge basis to customers holding pre-paid service cards issued by Genuity Systems Ltd. of Dhaka, a subsidiary of Genusys Inc. The pre-paid cards are available in denominations of $100 which can be cashed-in any time the customer no longer requires the service. Customers only pay for each hour they use the satellite back up service.

Customers to the Sure2Link service are connected to the Genuity Dhaka VSAT hub in Mirpur through the Dhaka metro fiber ring or other dedicated fiber links or wireless links in the city. When there is an international fiber outage subscribers can log onto the Sure2Link web site (www.sure21ink.com), enter the data rate they require and PIN number and get connected by satellite to the US Internet backbone at Hawaii Pacific Teleport within few minutes. When fiber service is restored the customer can log back on to the Sure2Link site and terminate the session. The customer prepaid account is then debited just for the period they received the Sure2Link service which can be purchased in multiples of one hour service blocks.

To regulate supply and demand the Sure2Link web site will post on its web site the charge per Mbps (full duplex) which will be charged for service for that calendar month. The hourly charge rate is subject to change each month depending on demand.

Vince Waterson, VP business development at HAWAII PACIFIC TELEPORT said "The Sure2Link is a two tier service. We offer a PREMIUM service, currently priced at $25 per hour, for customers who require a 1 megabit full duplex non-preemptible satellite backup solution during international fiber outages. We also offer a REGULAR service, which is provides a preemptible satellite connection, at a discount rate of $17 per hour to cope with customer peak hour traffic requirements of typically 2-3 hours per day and up to 6 hours on a busy day in Dhaka. Both services provide satellite connectivity to the USA Internet backbone through Hawaii Pacific Teleport".

The Satellite back up service uses the Loral Telstar 18 satellite (1 38E) to connect the Sure2Link hub in Dhaka to Hawaii.

Mr. Anis Rahman, CEO of Genuity Systems Ltd. welcomed the venture and said "We have been working with HPT for some years providing Internet service by satellite to Asia and the HPT initiative to offer the Sure2Link service complements Genusys expanding value added Internet network which currently spans 11 countries. Our experience has been that fiber links in the Asia-Pacific region are not as reliable as in the USA and for enterprises with mission critical operations such as outsourced callcenters, medical transcription facilities and Business Processing Operations there is a definite need for a satellite back up solution. Sure2Link fills that need."
