Workshop on finalization of curriculum for "Cervical and Breast Cancer screening".

With UNFPA's assistance the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of BSMMU in collaboration with Government of Bangladesh has successfully completed the activities of "Pilot Program to Train Health Providers on Cervical Cancer Screening based on VIA Test". Cervical cancer screening has been introduced in selected 16 districts with help of UNFPA 6th country programme. Cervical and Breast Cancer Screening will be extended to rest of the districts by GOB in next five years with support of UNFPA. BSMMU along with national and international expert have developed a Draft Curriculum on Cervical and Breast Cancer Screening. The draft curriculum was shared with the stakeholders, programme manager, experts, and donors in a workshop on 30 May 2006 at IDB Bhaban. As per the recommendations and suggestions of the workshop, the draft curriculum was finalized and submitted to the national curriculum committee for approval.

The objectives of the workshop were to review the draft curriculum for cervical and breast cancer screening programme and to finalize the curriculum for cervical and breast cancer screening programme. Professor Sultana Jahan, chairman of obstetrics and gynecology was chairperson at this workshop. A wide group of gynecologists and consultants delivered their special speeches and suggestions in the event.

Some suggestions had taken by service providers and clients in that programmes are as follows- Social mobilization need through media (TV and postering), give advertisements in newspapers and magazines, arrange small group meetings, provide more trained staff for provision of VIA and information on CA cervix, arrange colposcopy at nearer center and make provision of free services for cervical cancer to the poor.
