The sand layer of Cox's Bazar sea beach is decaying due to rampant use of mosquito net for collecting fry, diminishing tourist attraction of world's longest sea beach. Every year, thousands of people are engaged in fish fry collection with mosquito nets with the advent of rainy season at 120-km area from Cox's Bazar beach to Badarmokam.
Though fish fry collection is prohibited in the coastal areas people catch fish fry ignoring the ban.
People are seen collecting fish fry by using mosquito nets at the most beautiful spots of the beach like Himchhari, Kolatoli, Inani, and Laboni.
Mosquito nets are seen covering the whole beach area and hundreds of people gather there for collecting the fish fry, polluting the environment of the sea beach.
The tourists also face trouble in bathing in the sea due to catching of fry with the help of mosquito nets covering almost the entire beach area.
Environmentalists said the decay of sand layer may affect the environment and necessary steps should be taken now, otherwise, it would be difficult to face the situation.
UNO of sadar upazila Syed Mohammad Belal said drives were conducted in the sea beach several times, nets were burnt and some people were arrested but it could not be stopped.
