THE overall management of the University of Dhaka, including the process of student enrollment in different departments have come under critical review following the detection of enrollment of some candidates in an irregular fashion. Unfortunately, some students were enrolled in different departments of the University by suppressing information about their qualifications. They were enrolled in the Departments of Political Science, International Relations, Chemistry and Business Administration. Some such students have been identified by the authority, which has cancelled the admission of seventy. More of such students admitted in an irregular fashion may be found, if the process of review of admission continues. Some of the students enrolled themselves in different departments for making political careers and did neither attend classes nor participated in examinations. They became student-leaders and worked as agents of political parties plus the governments that were in power from time to time.

THE Dhaka University, set up in the early twenties of the past century, played the major role in the field of education in Bangladesh. It has increased physical facilities for holding classes and seminars as well as providing residential accommodation to students and faculty members of different academic departments. The facilities for library, laboratory work, games and cultural activities have also been increased and updated over the decades for meeting the increased demand. The contribution of the Dhaka University to education and socio-economic development has been appreciated at home and abroad. Some quarters in the past termed the Dhaka University as the Oxford of the East. Teachers of different departments and the students enrolled there worked for broadening the base of knowledge. More universities have since been set up for providing higher education to increased number of students in the country.

It is worth noting that number of students in the Dhaka University has reached thirty-two thousand. Around five thousand of them are enrolled in each academic year. The candidates for enrollment in Dhaka University mainly come from the category of students who obtain GPA 5 or so in the public examination held at the Higher Secondary level. Others opt for enrollment in medical colleges, engineering universities and colleges. The enrollment in the Dhaka University should have been free from unfair practices and influences. One positive aspect of this development is that the irregularities in respect of admission of pupils have been detected by the university itself. For decades people had become used to thinking that admission procedures are fault-free. That faith has now been broken. We believe the premier university of this country would do its best to restore not only its pride but also that of its students.
