District administration yesterday declared one-square kilometer area of Shahpara in the town as an 'infected zone' after detection of avian influenza in the poultry birds.
Livestock department culled at least 10,000 birds during the last 24 hours to stop spread of the virus while panic gripped the local people and owners of the poultry farms.
District administration in a publicity campaign urged the people not to be panicked, but to remain careful about the situation. Control rooms were set up in the local circuit house and district livestock office in this regard. Six teams led by magistrates started house-to-house search at Ashrampara, Shahpara, Munshipara, Khalpara, kalibari, Pashchim Hazipara, Fakirpara, Dadapara, Nishchintapur and Artgallery area at 11 p.m. on Tuesday.
The teams brought together at least 6,000 ducks, chickens and pigeons and culled them before burial on the bank of the Tangoan river.
After getting official report on Avian Influenza virus in the birds last on Tuesday, Deputy Commission held meeting with the concerned officials and instructed them to go for necessary measures to check further spread of the virus.
