Ataur Rahman Sunny, the chief of military wing of banned JMB and younger brother of Shaikh Abdur Rahman was taken on a 119-day police remand for interrogation in 19 cases yesterday. Such a long police remand of any accused is the first ever in the history of Bangladesh.
At least 7 JMB cadres were also arrested in different districts, and explosives and bomb like objects were recovered.
Meanwhile, Alfadanga police of Faridpur arrested a madrasah teacher, who resembles like that of JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka granted the remand when police and RAB produced Ataur Rahman Sunny before the court under tough security.
Sunny would be interrogated in different phases in RAB custody.
Meanwhile, chief of banned Hurkatul Jihad al Islami-Bangladesh Mufti Mohammad Abdul Hannan and son-in-law of JMB chief Abdul Awal were taken on separate five-day fresh remand while treasurer of JMB Fariduddin was taken on a four-day remand.
Sunny was shown under arrest in 17 cases filed in different police stations in the Dhaka Metropolis for bomb explosions in August 17.
After granting remand, Sunny was taken to the office of the RAB-3 for interrogation in an arms case filed with the Sabujbagh Thana.
On December 14, in a major success of the anti-militancy drive, the law enforcing agencies captured Sunny from the Abdul Latif dormitory of Tejgaon Polytechnic Institute.
A madrasah teacher, who looks like JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, was detained in Alfadanga upazila at Thursday noon.
Our Faridpur Correspndent reports: Alfadanga police arrested Hafez Shamsul Haque Munir, 38, a teacher of Bagdanga Hafezia Madrasah in Boalmari upazila.
Soon after his capture, a rumour spread across the district that Shaikh Abdur Rahman was arrested from Alfadanga upazila.
Police recovered two rubber seals—one using the name of the Prime Minister and another of local MP KM Obaidur Rahman—from his possession.
In Dhaka, the RAB personnel arrested a suspected JMB man from city's Uttara area.
The arrested was identified as Abdullah Bhuiyan, 62, son of late Mohiuddin Bhuiyan, of North Uttar Khan in the capital.
On receipt of information, a team of RAB-1 raided Chanpara area in North Uttar Khan and caught him, reportedly the coordinator of Uttara JMB unit.
Our Habiganj Correspondent writes, the RAB arrested two persons from Baniachang upazila on Wednesday night suspecting them to be members of JMB.
The arrested were identified as Farid Mollah, 38, of village Chanpara and Maulana Mostaq Ahmed, 48.
Our Moulvibazar Correspondent says, Moulvibazar Sadar police arrested a member of JMB following the confessional statement of arrested JMB cadre Murad.
The arrested was identified as Kamal Uddin, the teacher of Katarai Madrasah under Sylhet Sadar upazila.
During interrogation Kamal confessed his involvement in August 17 serial bomb blasts at Kusumbag area under Moulvibazar town.
Our Barisal Correspondent adds, Barisal police recovered a bomb-like object from a fruit shop adjoining to Sonali Bank, Bakerganj branch.
Witnesses said, Majid Hossain, teacher of the Dudhal Mou School informed police about the bomb-like object wrapped in red scotch tape.
Police said sand and glass were found inside it after scanning.
Our Sylhet Correspondent also reports, BDR personnel recovered huge explosives and six detonators from Nayagram frontier area in Companyganj upazila early yesterday. Official sources said a patrol team of BDR seized 440 grams of explosives and the six detonators as terrorists brought those into Bangladesh from India at about 5 AM. However, none was arrested in this connection.
Our Chuadanga Correspondent reports, the banned JMB yesterday issued a letter threatening to blow up the Shilpakala and Shishu Academies in Chuadanga.
